And got a reply thanking me for the invite, (she actually knew about the Watch...links to it from her site) and saying she might pop in after she finishes the Last Chrons and 7th Decimate. :)

I like that even when the author points out imperfections, she still remains solidly a Gap fan.

I dislike that she doesn't feel Angus can be redeemed.

This would probably be a good topic. But if Angus had done something so horrible that, no matter what he did afterwards, he could not be redeemed in the readers' mind, then I have to wonder what they consider redemption to consist of.

(I am not saying Angus did or did not earn redemption. I am talking about whether it's possible or unequivocally impossible.)

Redemption has been a topic of my thoughts for a long time. It's inextricably linked with "worth". (A coupon is worth nothing until you redeem it. A sports player who screws up is redeemed when he does something really good, and so proves his worth. etc. etc.)

So when you say Angus can't be redeemed, to me you are saying Angus cannot ever have worth to someone else.

To me, the two are not inextricably linked. Or at least, not in that sense. Worth has many different implications. Angus is worth a lot to Warden, because he's maybe even the means of Warden's redemption. But it's a selfish worth if you see what I mean. Just because he has that worth does not make up for what he has done.

Personally, I thought SRD succeeded in making Angus a sympathetic character, to me at least.

It's one of the things I admire about his writing...he made TC, who should have been sympathetic, somebody we disliked, and Angus, who should have been execrable, somebody we could admire.

Very sneaky writing. :D
