Go read it.
Now.
Seriously.
Or we're not friends.

I wanted to love this. Because, you know, Africa.
But reading the first chapter and there's child rape and weird sex and just more than I could handle... and I read several books in Game of Thrones.

Understandable. It's a difficult book, with plenty of trauma.
What really got me into it is the complexity of the characters. I'm pretty certain there isn't a 2D character among them - it's rare to find a fantasy book that's willing to have character describe themselves one way but act in a manner which reveals they are either lying to themselves or to the reader, and then reveal through their actions towards the end of the book what they truly want for themselves.
The author has stated that it's going to be a trilogy and that the other two books will roughly cover the events from other points of view. Given how layered the characters are, and his method of revealing their underlying personas through events over time, I'm very interested in the sequels when they eventually come out.
