Melanie Rawn's Dragon Prince/Dragon Star Trilogies

Anyone read these? She's an extremely talented author, master of character development, creating mystery and shocking you at every turn. She also gives dragons an interesting twist, one that you don't fully understand until near the end of the second trilogy. But BEWARE!
You may become attached to all her characters, read the books over and over, and be left thirsting for more (which she has no intention of writing). But in the genre of fantasy, these are a must read. (IMHO) Any input?

Happy reading!

I really enjoyed those books, the characters are really awesome, Chay, I love that guy, Sioned, what a woman, Kazander, what can I say........but.....Rohan..tear.....had to be my favorite, I really liked the scenes in which he used his knives..ala...Maarken and the pretender.

Good stuff....

I'd like to discuss further but I dont really know in which direction to go....so you choose one and I'll follow.

O.k. Let's remember our spoilers though.

First question; have you checked out Melanie's website, www.melanierawn.com

it's very cool. Melanie has begun writing Captal's Tower, the third installment of her Exiles series!

Anyway, let's begin.

Which is your favorite book?

It's been a while, but let me think. I believe that the first book is one of my favorites, because it has alot of Rohan, and the relationship between him and Sioned in it, I also love the fight at the end with Rolestra. That's bad.

I think that the 3rd book is probably my least favorite, just because I think it spends too much time on conspiracies and diarmahdi'im...is that right? It definitely has it's moments, but on the whole, a bit slow.

Which is your favorite and least, and why? I figure if you give me some details it will help refresh my memory.

My favorite is definitely Skybowl. The secrets and mysteries we've barely glimpsed before are exposed with a level of enchantment found nowhere else.

And I love that mirror, the use of dragons in battle, and nearly cried at the end... (she killed several loved characters!)

Oh yeah, I loved the mirror. Skybowl also was very much a coming of age for Pol, that was interesting, although I kept kicking myself because I just wanted him to stop pissing off the people who care for him.

But the biggest thing that kept taking me out was Andry and Pol's relationship, that was so damn frustrating.

and another question.....

"to bear what must be bourne." Is that from Dark Tower? I've read that but I haven't ever been able to remember what it's from.

That particular quote comes from Brinn of the Haruchai in the Second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever. He says it to Covenant... don't actually remember which book though.

Andry and Pol... what a team they would have made, had they set aside their differences earlier...

Also, I enjoyed the tension between Sionell and Pol, and Sionell and Meiglan...

But most of all, I loved Rohan, a man of honor, justice and even-handedness in almost all his dealings.

I totally agree, Rohan was my favorite character in those books. I love how Rawn developes him from youth, how he was always a scholar and more interested in knowledge, than in swordplay. And how tobin was the one who Zehastra? (thats not correct, but close enough) said should have been the boy. Yet, Rohan proves himself in the battle with the Merida at 17.

It suprising at times to think that this story was written by a woman, she has an amazing grasp of the inner intricacies of both the female and male characters. I've read many authors that can never really seem to grasp whats going on inside the heads of characters that are of a different sex from themselves.

There are many male authors who arent even in the ballpark when writing about the thoughts a female, and vice versa.

This didn't seem to be an issue for her at all, and I admire that greatly.

I still have no damn clue as to how to use the damn spoiler things and now I'm upset, I hate feeling like I just had my ass kicked by an inanimate object, and this isn't even that, its a series of electrical impulses. Damn the luck.

here..ill make an attempt....

IS THIS GOING TO ******* WORK????

I was totally unaware of that Vain, thanks. How did you find out?

Baradakas, its not hard, at the top right side of the screen you see.......Img....URL.....Spoiler. All you do is click spoiler once, and then just type, don't type inside the little brackets, thats what I used to do and it bugged the hell out of me. Just click and type. Then when you are done writing the spoiler, click the spoiler button again, and then just go on with your post. Thats it. Two clicks.

Hope that explains it. Try it out and see if it works.[/spoiler]

I didnt know that either, Vain! Wow, when you think about it though, it makes sense. They are both incredibly gifted writers, both care about thier fans (Melanie even posts on her website, keeping us updated). In fact she posted on MY thread that:
Spoiler

To top it all off, Melanie asks her reader's what they would like to read in her next book. In the next month or so, she promises some kind of project for the third Exiles installment. Her only promise about the book so far is:

Spoiler
she will reveal Collan's secrets
I like this spoiler stuff!

Oh I need to start eating humble pie on this one. I had that all wrong

It's Patricia McKillip I was thinking about. Of course you can quite easily see how I managed to confuse the two.

At least I'd like to think so....
