What's your day gig?

Post by deer of the dawn »

Beginning next year I am going to be an administrative principal of the elementary school where I've taught for a number of years. The position comes with the expectation that I will also teach a little, so I will continue to teach K-5 Music as I've done for 2 years (and will do forever unless we can find a "real" Music teacher).

I've moved from Yikes! to sad... to Cooooool.

And it made me wonder what other Watchers do with themselves all day long? I know a few of our occupations but not enough. Please elaborate.

I work for the City of Tampa, Florida in the Land Surveying department as a CAD Technician. I spend 8 hours a day, 5 days a week with my butt stapled to my seat drawing pictures. I expect to retire from the City in 12 or 13 years so I am here for the duration.
I recieve competitive pay for what I do and have the customary government benefits. Really can't complain but sometimes I do anyway. 😀

I'm a something for a digital marketing agency. :D Nobody really knows what I do, including my boss, but he's convinced I do it well, so it's all good. :D I'm a generalist, so I know a bit about everything and I just make sure shit gets done etc. etc.

Love my job.

Deer knows (and other people who've listened to me ramble know) mine... math tutor. <3
Love it.

Taught 3 students from home this weekend.
It really *worked*.
(Some of the online tutoring that I've done has not been nearly this efficient!)

Also, Desmos.com is the gorgeous 2D graphing program that I wish I'd had in my childhood.
(it was critical in one students' tutoring session yesterday.)

I am a Manager for Luxottica (Sunglasshut, Lenscrafters, Pearle, Target optical, Oakley). I have worked here for 20 years and have worn many hats under the same company.

Point of Sale support is where I started at SGH as a temp worker(I got that because of my DOS experience)

Systems Analyst/Administrator

Manager QC/QA/Systems

Sr. Manager Luxottica North America

Manager Asset Protection Inventory Services - A couple of years ago I restructured my job to this as I prepared for retirement and needed to move to a different State to help take care of my FIL. Lower stress, lower demands, better pay (go figure that and yes that was unexpected LOL. Apparently someone with that much time has a warehouse of knowledge they didn't want to lose).

This should be my last true job as I have plans to retire in the next two to three years (I could go longer but would like to get out of the rat race early)

There you have it!

Not just cheap sunglasses...cheap prescription sunglasses.

My day gigs over the years have been like Sinatra's "That's Life": I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate, a poet, a pawn, and a king. Actually, the observant Watcher already knew the middle two of that sequence. Heh.

Most recently, I was with a major cloud provider and had a lot to do with the global buildout of the content delivery infrastructure that make it possible for y'all to stream whatever you want, with almost no buffering or lag, even when everybody is doing it at the same time, as they are now.

I walked away a couple years ago, when Menolly came down with leukemia and breast cancer. She's pretty much well again, but now is not the time to contemplate going back into the grinder.

Maybe yall can pop over to Nigeria, we live in Dimension 404 over here!

Your last sentence, SD, made me think of Mark Hamill in Slipstream, where he is trying to nose up his spaceship and screaming with his co-pilot and it doesn't end well for him, as in BOOM. (It was a great movie moment in a forgettable film because Hamill played a mean jerk but in that moment you reeeeaaaaallly wanted that nose to go up!)

Which is what we are alllllll working toward. (I'm getting a taste of it now as we are on intermittent lockdown, so I have to get a week's worth of work done in 2 days, and then sit at home on my burgeoning duff and do whatever the flip I want!)

Since Sarge runs the prison kitchen, at least the sentenced-if-not-condemned folk get well fed.

Riffing off of Luci's retirement gig, that is what the last 28 months of my life has been (other than less Scrabble and only two other mouths to feed.) The only substantive change in the last two months is that I no longer shop every day, limiting my outings to two or three a week.

My day gig is still the same but from home. I am a team of one. I forgot to mention my wife also works for Luxottica and she also did not get furloughed.

However with most of the stores closed right now, my actual work has ground to a slow crawl. But dont tell my boss that. Team meeting (conference call) from 4 - 5. Got to tell them how important I am LOL
