House of the Dragon

With the final season of GoT ending so badly, and since it appears GRRM won't be releasing TWOW any time soon (if ever,) it's great to have a new series based off of Fire and Blood.

I thought the first episode looked great. It seems HBO is sparing no expense.

There's a good setup for the Dance of Dragons that is to come.

I enjoyed the revelation of Aegon's true purpose for conquering Westeros.

I thought it was great! And you're right about the SOIAF reveal.

Watched the first two episodes, and really not that impressed. Not that they were bad, but more "meh" than anything else. Maybe it'll pick up a bit. Daemon seems promising. :D

Episode 4 was the best yet. The story is really moving along now.

Code: Select all

While this show may not be as good as the original (yet), it is doing everything right that ROP is doing wrong. The acting is pro. The writing is witty, entertaining, and real. These feel like real people having real problems and real emotions, not little speeches or exposition. There were a couple times in episode 4 when I thought , "That was really clever." For instance, when the queen explained away Daemon's confession to her husband as self-serving, damaging Viserys more than himself. These characters demonstrate insight into each other.

It's also gorgeous. Every shot is consistently well done. You can tell this is a production by a company that has been doing shows for decades, not some inexperienced company just throwing money at a production. There is a gravitas that only comes from pros with tons of experience doing what they do best. ROP is amateurish in comparison.

With the two blockbuster fantasy series on at the same time, it certainly offers a chance to see what works and what doesn't. It has made me realize that good writing puts you into the scene, so that you wonder, "What would I do in this situation?" That's how you relate, how it means something to you. With bad writing, you're thinking instead, "How would I have changed this scene to make it better?" You don't get into the story because you're stuck at the level of the writing. The writing is actually a barrier to the story. Maybe this seems obvious, but the sense of being in and out of a story seems important enough to emphasize. There is something magical about good writing that transports you to another level, opening a portal into a story-space.

Good post.

(Not that I'm yet that enthralled by this, but I agree I prefer watching this to RoP.)

so i watched the first episode, then watched rings of power first episode, then i didn't watch either until a few episodes had cached. then i went back to rings of power because i'd liked that one the best at that point, then a couple days ago i watched eps 2-7 of house and decided, for all the reasons Zar mentioned, i like House better.

except i liked the young Rhaenyra (milly alcock) acting-wise,better than the older one.

Looks like they've suddenly decided to take a leaf out of GoT's book though and start lighting the whole thing with a few anaemic glow-worms though.

Yeah, and it was again Miguel Sapochnik, who directed "The Long Night" the episode in GOT Season 8 that was so dark it was practically unwatchable.

Other problem of course is that we know what's going to happen, right? My guess is that next episode, Viserys finally dies. :D (Possibly only at the end, or else a jump to him already dead, can't decide. :D )

Episode 8 was indeed emotional. HOD is earning my respect and in typical GOT fashion you have to keep your eye on one Matt Smith/Daemon. Expect the unanticipated or suffer the consequences.

I laughed at him in the previews and said I'd never be able to unsee him as the 11th Doctor in a blond wig.

Yeah, been eating those words.
