I just watched the first episode of the new Amazon series Rings of Power.

There's only one word to describe my initial experience: uninteresting.

I have hope it develops into something watchable.

I agree - 1 episode in, and I don't care. Trying to be patient, but there's just so much other stuff I'd rather watch.

Im in through Ep 3 and I have to agree. I am not "connecting" to anyone or even the plot enough to really keep my attention. Im gonna watch a bit more but so far its underwhelming.

started watching both rings of power and house of the dragon at the same time, thought i liked rings of power better but now i like house of the dragon better...but i'll keep watching both probably.

i let a few episodes cache up before watching either.

I keep hearing good things about House of the Dragon.

But here's what I'm having a problem with.
I never watched Game of Thrones.
I was going to start after the final season but heard that the ending was universally hated so I passed on the whole thing.
Why invest so much time when I know the ending is going to suck.
Aren't I going to feel the same way with House, knowing how it ultimately ends?

I didn't have any problem at all with the ending of GoT. I don't know why people did. It's not like it deviated from the non-existent ending in the books. It doesn't seem unlikely, either, given the rest of the story.

My wife, who does not like fantasy, and only managed to tolerate a few Marvel movies, watched the whole shoe.

I can't get into it. Part of that is because I've read the Silmarillion twice. And yeah, sure, that's not the source, but it wasn't supposed to contradict the source. I feel like it does, albeit vaguely. And I don't care that it's not canon; I do care that it's just not very good. Not horrible, but...

And I think everyone remembers, more or less, my opinion on Martin. I don't care if HotD is the best thing since The Magicians. I refuse to contribute (even if Matt Smith sorely tempts me)

I made my opinion known about RoP in another thread. I don’t really like it.

As for GoT, I had no problem with the ending. It made sense who “won when I remembered from whose point of view the first chapter of the first book was. I haven’t started with the new series mainly because I don’t want to pick up HBO again.

Watching HOD and though it's not the immersive experience GOT was it's surprisingly good. Watched a bit more of ROP and I think I've seen enough.

Yeah, I'm mostly finding RoP unutterably boring, and wondering where the hell that budget went... :D

budget = sets, costumes, makeup, props, salaries etc
and has nothing to do with the quality of the writing.
in my opinion. ;)

i find the pacing a bit slow but enjoyable to look at <shrug>
i'll probably keep watching.

The GF is liking it, so I'm kinda watching by default. Prob wouldn't bother with this or House of the Dragon if not for her.

(Also, for [Syl], there's discussion in the Tolkein forum on this too.)

Another bit of a meh episode...so many meaningful looks... :D

I'm watching it. It's okay. I find myself picking up my phone at times, though -- never a good sign.

You triggered me, Syl! Or rather I triggered myself. It’d been a long time since I’ve read the Silmarillion. Seeing that I’m thinking I should reread it. I have a copy, along with about 20 other boxes of books in the garage that have been there since we had the fire at my house 6 years ago. Rather than dig though them to find the book, I downloaded the kindle version.

I can't tell you how many times I've heard people say that the Silmarillion is too dense, too dry, too many names, reads like a history book, and most of all boring.

Don't get me wrong. I love it, read it many times.

But maybe you can just possibly maybe kinda sorta see why a TV adaptation isn't - can't be - exactly the same and without embellishment? It be boring. Sorry, but it's true.
