Back around 1980, I found a book of small posters from Marvel. One page per character/group, with a little blurb. I was at the very very beginning of my collecting days, and didn't know some of the characters. In particular Shang Chi and the X-Men stood out, did to their unfamiliarity. Both seemed intriguing. I went to the corner store and found the current X-Men issue. It happened to be Wolverine in the sewers, tearing the Hellfire Club's goons apart. As they say, timing is everything. Those who know who would agree that the middle of the Dark Phoenix Saga is a heck of a good place to be introduced to the X-Men.
I think I "discovered" the X-Men shortly after you.
The Dark Phoenix saga was over by then though.
I just missed it but that's all the X-Men books after were referencing back to.
Eventually, when comic book stores became I thing, I picked up back issues and, wow, it really was awesome.
The story, the art, just incredible.
Bryne is a master.
I didn't fall in love with Bryne's art until he did the FF series and then when I went hunting for back issues of the X-Men I was happily surprised he did them too at that time.
I tried flipping through some recent X-Men books the other day.
Didn't like it and had no idea what was going on.
Not to sound like a grumpy old man but I remember when any idiot could pick up a comic and get up to speed in a page or two.
I think Stan the Man said that being able to do so was vitally important to enjoying a comic book.
Think about it, you wouldn't buy a novel and start reading on chapter 23 and hope to figure it out eventually.
That Wendigo fight in the woods was awesome.
It was back when Wolverine was afraid of being outmatched and killed.
Kurt was scared too if I remember right.
Great issue!
