Originally being from Kansas City, Missouri, and still having a number of friends from there who never left, I can at times get the word on what some of the hot musical acts are that are making the rounds of the bars in that area. That is how I first heard about rapper TechN9ne and about rock band Puddle of Mudd. And, since the year 2013, that is how I kept hearing about this blues rocker named Samantha Fish.
As the years have gone by, she has broadened her style to include elements of country, pop, jazz, and even hip-hop in her music and singing style, and changed her image from long-haired honey blonde to bleach-blonde with a hairstyle a la Marilyn Monroe combined with big fake eyelashes. But her playing and singing style is as fierce as ever, still very rooted in the blues, and it seems like her star keeps inexorably rising, even though what she plays isn't what would be considered trendy.
Back in mid-2021, feeling restless from the pandemic having shut down many live music shows for months and months, then things were starting to open back up and live performance began being more common once more, I talked a friend of mine from New York into going to see Samantha Fish with me. She was playing a club in Tucson that might hold 250 people, maximum, and he went along with the idea, though he emphasized that he was just trusting my judgement, as he had never heard any of her material. And she and her band just TORE IT UP on stage, climaxing with several tunes where she was using her home-built cigar-box guitar. And my New Yorker friend became a hardcore fan, having seen her live twice since, and talking me into seeing her again next September when she rolls back in to the southern Arizona desert. Right now, she is working her way through Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, having already played dates in the U.K. and Spain. Don't know with today's musical climate if she will become a blockbuster act, headlining festivals, but she certainly deserves to be! Here is one of her signature songs, from 2019's Kill or be Kind.
BULLETPROOF
(Written by Samantha Fish)
You got me trained to sit on a stage
Not show my rage for you
You got my love, its not enough
I need to prove it to you
What's the difference, what's the difference
What's the difference in me, now?
I can change, I can change, I can change oh tell me how, oh
I'd turn this on you, I'd turn it on you, turn it on you
Oh...but you're bulletproof!
Turn it on you, I'd turn this on you, I'd turn it on you
But you're bulletproof!
You got my gaze, I'm just a phase
A shift in your point of view
Rocks are off, you demagogue
I'm just someone to talk to
Make me feel something real, I'd fall for your muse
Where's the spark thru the dark for you light my fuse?
But it's all about you!
I'd turn it on you, turn it on you, I'd turn it on you
Oh...but you're bulletproof!
I'd turn it on you, turn it on you, I'd turn it on you, yeah
But you're bulletproof!
Oh...it's all about YOU, baby!
Broken things, I kick and scream, I'd fall apart to move you
Shot down in vogue, I got the joke, you need me bulletproof
Twisted up and turned out, you say I'm crazy now
You're bellicose, I loved you so, I'm on my way out
I'm on my way out!
I'd turn it on you, turn it on you, I'd turn it on you
But you're bulletproof!
I'd turn it on you, turn it on you, I'd turn it on you
But you're bulletproof!
Oh, I make you bulletproof
