I was wondering if there are any more German (or Swiss, Austrian...) SRD readers out there.

I think it is a shame that there still is not a single German-language SRD fanpage (like THE LAND) or forum on the www. At least none that I'm aware of. Neither is there a discussion board.

Not that I consider myself capable of starting such a project...But there are certainly a lot of questions arising, especially now, that the Third Chronicles are about to be published.

For example: Does anyone know how long it will take till the books are translated into German? Does anyone know who is going to publish them? I think the last edition was by Droemer-Knaur, the first one by Heyne...

Do you prefer to read them in English or in German?

How did you come to know SRD (I think he is even less known here than in the US).

Do you like the cover art and the illustrations?

Where are you from?

And so on...

Maybe we could create a small platform for that kind of talk, exchange information, or just say hello.

Okay, da hier sowieso keiner reinschaut, mal kurz auf dt.:
Kann es sein, daß in D alle Bücher außer dem Mordant-Zyklus nicht mehr aufgelegt werden?
Ich versuche gerade, irgendwie an eine dt. Amnion/Gap-Ausgabe zu kommen. Ebay habe ich gerade verpatzt, und bei Amazon schaut's auch duster aus. Allenfalls gebraucht bekommt man die noch.

Ganz schön frustrierend.

Naja, vielleicht können wir hier ein paar German News austauschen.

Leider sind glaube ich z. Zt. fast alle Bücher von Donaldson nicht mehr lieferbar.Von Knaur gibt es noch den einen oder anderen Covenant Band, aber da Knaur im Begriff ist seine Fantasy Reihe einzustellen, werden auch die nicht mehr lange lieferbar sein.

Ich habe Donaldson erst kürzlich "entdeckt" und bislang alle Bücher nur second-hand gekauft. Leider einige sehr alte Heyne TBs mit füchterlichen Covern.

Suchst Du einen bestimmten Band aus dem Amonium Zyklus? Ich war heute noch in meinen Lieblings Second Hand Buchladen und dort hatten sie einige Ausgaben eines Bandes. Allerdings weiß ich nicht mehr welcher das war, aber das könnte ich ja nachgucken!

Leider hat Donaldson gesagt, dass bislang noch kein deutscher Verleger Interesse an den LAST CHRONICLES bekundigt hat.

Donalson hat das mit den Last Chronicles gesagt? Wo und wann? Und ich habe mir schon Hoffnungen gemacht, daß die anderen Bücher dann vielleicht auch neu aufgelegt werden...

Die alten Ausgaben von Covenant (Heyne) sind fürchterlich, zumindest die ersten drei Bücher - da hast du recht. Und ich habe damals auch noch die Erstausgaben gekauft. Der Witz ist aber, daß ich durch "Spiegel ihrer Träume" erst auf Donaldson gestoßen bin, das war so 1987. Damals hat mich das Cover interessiert, und die Tatsache, daß das Buch so schön dick war. Paradox.

Daß die letzten Chroniken keinen Verleger finden, ist eine schlechte Nachricht. Nicht nur, weil die Bücher sonst den meisten dt. Lesern vorenthalten bleiben. Ich weiß selbst nicht, ob ich die Chroniken auf Englisch lesen möchte, wenn sich schon so viele Muttersprachler beklagen. Bei einem anderen Autor/Thema hätte ich da nicht solche Hemmungen. Mein Englisch ist nicht so schlecht, aber SRD verwendet ja oftmals sehr ausgefallene Vokabeln...

Danke für dein Angebot. Bisher habe ich nur den ersten Teil, "Die Wahre Geschichte". Ehrlich gesagt, steht das Buch schon seit Jahren hier rum - ich habe Donaldson erst vor kurzen wiederentdeckt (und durch dieses Forum). Und ich will erst zu Lesen anfangen, wenn ich alle habe.

Ich denke, man bekommt die Bücher schon noch irgendwie, zur Not würde ich sie auch auf Englisch lesen.

Aber wegen den 3rd Chronicles sollte man mal ein bißchen Druck auf die dt. Verlage machen. Eine E-Mail-Aktion der dt. Fans oder so.

das mit den LAST CHRONICLES hat Donaldson in einer email an mich gesagt, denn ich hatte an dem "gradual interview" auf seiner webseite teiilgenommen und dort gefragt, ob es schon einen deutschen verleger für die LAST CHRONICLES geben würde. vor ein paar tagen hatte ich dann eine persönliche antwort von SRD in meiner mailbox.

er meint, dass die deutschen verlage wohl erst mal abwarten würden, ob die LAST CHRONICLES ein erfolg werden, bevor sie die rechte erwerben. wenn der erste band in den usa ein erfolg wird, dann ist auch eine deutsche ausgabe wahrscheinlich. also bleibt nur abwarten. bislang habe ich donaldson auch nur auf deutsch gelesen. aber RUNES OF THE EARTH werde ich mich sobald er erscheint auf englisch besorgen.

ich werde am mittwoch mal nachschauen gehen welchen Roman meine buchhandlung da noch stehen hat. ich sage dir dann hier bescheid.

Das finde ich ja nett von ihm, daß er dir persönlich geantwortet hat. Ich habe mir auch schon überlegt, sowas zu fragen, aber ich dachte, daß eher allgemeine Fragen beantwortet werden.

Notfalls würde ich die Bücher auch auf Englisch lesen. Neun Jahre zu warten habe ich jedenfalls keine Lust.

Und danke wegen der Buch-Recherche. Ich glaube aber, daß der Versand der vier letzten Bücher ziemlich aufwändig werden würde (bei ebay hat er wegen der Dicke der Bücher 7 Euro gekostet, als Paket). Da wäre es geschickter, ich würde mir die US-Ausgaben bei amazon.de bestellen, die zudem billiger als die dt. Neuausgaben sind.

For information:
I was complaining to regis about the fact that it's more and more difficult to get the German editions of SRD's works and asking if there's anything planned for a German translation of the Last Chronicles.
He told me that most of the books are out of print now in Germany, and that he asked SRD about the translation in the gradual interview, and that SRD mailed him (!) that the German publishers would probably wait to see how the books perform on the US market.

Of course, there are a lot of people in Germany who are able to read English books, but it's still a shame that only those people should get access to these books. When I read the chronicles I was about 18, and I coulnd't have read them in English, I guess.

I wonder if it would do any good to send emails or letters to the publishing houses in Germany, just asking about the Last Chronicles and showing interest.

Torrent, I certainly don't think it would hurt anything to try that!

And I am certainly not offended by people talking in their native language. Please continue, in fact. You both have lovely English, but I am certain it must feel good to both of you to be able to discuss Donaldson in German.

And, yes, Sev would love it! I wish that babyface would come back to us!

And I don't mind not being able to read when you type in German, as long as it's not about me.

Writing to German publishers is a good idea, but I think that should wait a little longer. right now the fantasy publishing world in germany is in flux, and it is kind of hard to see what will happen.

Heyne, Germany´s biggest publisher of sf and fantasy, has been sold to randomhouse germany, who also have their own fantasy imprint, Blanvalet. However, Heyne Fantasy was excluded from that deal and sold seperately to another publisher, namley Sweden-based Bonnier, who also owns the German publishing houses Carlsen and Piper (both publish fantasy). Right now it is impossible to tell what will happen to the former Heyne Fantasy line. It would make sense to combine it with the Piper Fantasy line, but that line is new and still small. Expanding it rapidly might be diffult.


On top of that, Knaur has announced that they will cancel their own fantasy imprint Excalibur. They will still publish the occasional fantasy novel, but in their mainstream line. Some series´s will be cancelled right in the middle. The remaining volumes will not be published (e.g. for Jaqueline Carey and a bunch of others).

Note: Heyne was Donaldson´s long-time German publisher. Knaur reprinted all six TC novels as their inaugural titles some years back.

I was told somewhere that if you want to write something 'publishable' in Germany it had better be Fantasy, not SciFi, because there was a bigger fantasy market. Strange.

I didn't like the Heyne editions of Covenant at all. Especially the artwork IN the books was really annoying at times. But I still wonder why Heyne stopped publishing SRD. Does this have to do with the whole randomhouse transaction?

I always liked the Heyne fantasy and scifi line, it reminds me of the past. Heyne and Fantasy seemed to go hand in hand in the 80s. Those were the days...when you walk into a bookshop and there would be a BIG shelf for sf/fantasy, a wide range to choose from. That's how I found "The Mirror of her Dreams" and SRD.
Now you can be happy if you find anything at all on display. Hohlbein, King, Rowland, Tolkien. And that's it.

But then, after the Chronicles I wasn't really that much interested in fantasy books any more.
