So what kind of music would you use in a movie version of Mordant's Need?

Horns, anyone?

Should it be a classical score, or do you have any singers/songwriters/bands in mind? Or maybe any classical pieces (with horns?).

Any suggestions? :)

Of course, every charakter could have his/her own type of music or musical theme. Like, there could be a classical score, and then we would have Darsint accompanied by some kick-ass Heavy Metal... 8)

I'd go with James Horner-Legends of the Fall, Braveheart type soundtrack--yeah and some Godsmack 4 Darsint--"Never misunderstand me, stay away from me!" 8)

Well, there would HAVE to be horns.

Jazz or soft classical would work for me ... but I like the thought of a hard rock theme especially for Darsint.

I like the idea. :)

And for the rest of the movie...an instrumental score like in LOTR. Maybe some vocals in between, from Enya, Loreena McKennit or Tori Amos. Ore do you think that's too much 'kitsch'?

There should be something creepy for the little green aliens/goblins(?), too (the ones who haunt Fayle's care - I like that part).

This song reminds me of Darsint, Joyse, Havelock and many other elements of Mordant's Need. It struck me, while listening to it on the car radio today, that this song, simply, has ti be the lead in for the movie!

"Veteran of the Psychic Wars"
Blue Oyster Cult

You see me now a veteran of a thousand psychic wars
I've been living on the edge so long, where the winds of limbo roar
And I'm young enough to look at, and far too old to see
All the scars are on the inside
I'm not sure that there's anything left of me

Don't let these shakes go on, it's time we had a break from it
It's time we had some leave
We've been living in the flames
We've been eating up our brains
Oh please, don't let these shakes go on.

You ask me why I'm weary, why I can't speak to you
You blame me for my silence, say it's time I changed and grew
But the war's still going on, dear, and there's nowhen that I know
And I can't stand forever
I can't say if we're ever gonna be free

Don't let these shakes go on, it's time we had a break from it
It's time we had some leave
We've been living in the flames
We've been eating up our brains
Oh please, don't let these shakes go on.

You see me now a veteran of a thousand psychic wars
My energy is spent at last, and my armor is destroyed
I have used up all my weapons, and I'm helpless and bereaved
Wounds are all I'm made of
Did I hear you say that this is victory?

Don't let these shakes go on, it's time we had a break from it
Send me to the rear
Where the tides of madness swell
And men sliding into hell
Oh please, don't let these shakes go on.

You see me now a veteran of a thousand psychic wars
My energy is spent at last, and my armor is destroyed
I have used up all my weapons, and I'm helpless and bereaved
Wounds are all I'm made of
Did I hear you say that this is victory?
is this not Darsint? Godrotting RIGHT it is!!! :R

Don't forget "Geraden's Champion" by Kim Novak...

An expendable boy, mixing sand and marred apology.
An expression of hope, brave resolve, he shapes the mold,
appeals for Mordant's need.

The need is real
Renegade imagers
Masters of mirrors
Bring foulness and horror

The need is true
Imminent chaos
Bring us a champion
Extinguish the terror

An irrelevant girl, affecting nothing within her desperate world.
Her existence in doubt, dream deprived, her mirrors stand,
to prove that she is real.

Faintly in the distance over crisp snow-cover hills.
Enchanted music calls to her and fortifies her will.
Through a mirror formed from the purest sand of dreams.
She takes his sturdy faithful hand and gives in to his need

The need is real
Renegade imagers
Masters of mirrors
Bring foulness and horror

The need is true
Imminent chaos
Bring us a champion
Extinguish the terror

Only one choice for me: Sally Oldfield.

Well... maybe her brother, Mike, could contribute too.

I like the idea of merging different types of music....for the sake of expressing the disjointed realities involved.

Different composers or music for different characters and different environs. Meaning that yes darsint should get his own music. So should Eremis, Gilbur, Gart, etc.

But there should be entirely different, maybe competing composers writing music.... one score slowly losing presence to the other as the reality of the situation gets discovered by Terisa and Geraden.

And the music should change when Terisa is in her apartment, when she is in the congery, when she is in the peacock room, when she finally gets to go out into the fresh air...

I think that there is a lot of discovery that happens in the story, and the music should shift a little as the main characters come to discoveries.

That's what I'd want anyways.

While a rock soundtrack is probably not ideal...

Rush's 'Double Agent'

Where would you rather be?
Anywhere but here
When will the time be right?
Anytime but now

"On the edge of sleep, I was driting for half the night
Anxious and restless, pressed down by the darkness
Bound up and wound up so tight."

So tight...

"So many decisions, a million revisions
Caught between darkness and light..."

Wilderness of mirrors
World of polished steel
Gears and iron chains
Turn the grinding wheel
I run between the shadows
Some are phantoms, some are real

Where would you rather be?
Anywhere but here
When will the time be right?
Anytime but now
Where would you rather be?
The doubt and the fear
I know would all disappear
Anywhere but here
Anywhere but here...

"On the edge of sleep, I heard voices behind the door
The known and the nameless, familiar and faceless
My angels and my demons at war"

At war...

"Which one will lose depends on what I choose
Or maybe which voice I ignore..."

Wilderness of mirrors
Streets of cold desire
My precious sense of honour
Just a shield of rusty wire
I hold against the chaos
And the cross of holy fire

Wilderness of mirrors
So easy to deceive
My precious sense of rightness
Is sometimes so naive
So that which I imagine
Is that which I believe

"On the edge of sleep, I awoke to a sun so bright
Rested and fearless, cheered by your nearness
I knew which direction was right"

Was right...

"The case had been tried by the jury inside
The choice between darkness and light...
The choice between darkness and light."

Haven't had a chance to hear this one yet, but I'm trying to get the CD.
Mirror

music and lyrics © 1991 by Eben Brooks Rosenberger

Mirror on the wall, can you show me that I'm here?
I've never felt this fear so bad, like I don't exist at all.
Mirrors all around, 'cause I'm the only one who sees me
In a world that doesn't need me, and I'm afraid to make a sound.

And when I sleep I dream of nothing,
But now there's something holding on.
Sometimes I wake with my ears ringing
And my heart singing, but then it's gone.

Mirror on the shelf, do I really look like that?
I've never been looked at by one who saw me for myself.
Reflections in their eyes of what they want to read into me,
And they always look right through me, and it's all a pack of lies.

And these visions I am receiving
Are all deceiving like a dream.
But now I hear the horns a-calling,
And snow is falling, or so it seems.

Mirror above my bed, am I truly waking,
Or am I just creating my existance in my head?
If imagery alone can make the world I live in clearer,
If I step right through the mirror, will I find that I've gone home?

'Cause when I hear the trumpet's fanfare,
I find I can't care anymore.
And when the riders are approaching,
I feel death encroaching. I want it more.
