What parts of the book upset you the most? Seeing Joan in the Secong Chronicles? The fact that the Land was destroyed? Thomas' death?

Yes... That was also very sad...

For me it's either the breaking of the Vow or the massacre of the Giants.

Tull's tale--and especially his faltering attempts to begin telling it, the narrative equivalent of "hesitation marks"--proved right gut-wrenching. He needed a caamora and couldn't have it.

A close second is Foamfollower's apparent self-immolation in Hotash Slay--though it is soon followed by one of the great eucatastrophes of the mythos when Covenant meets him again (now the Pure One, emerging from the mother of all caamoras.)

Well, my favorite saddest part was when Hergrom and Ceer were killed. I don't feel as close to the First Chrons, so I don't really have a heart-wrenching moment from them to add.

Flinch! In a way Hergrom and Ceer's demise is sadder than some of the higher-profile tragic moments, precisely because they are minor characters--just two more dead soldiers, as it were--and yet no less brave and self-sacrificing than any one of their countrymen for 6000 years.

Ceer had a particularly unspeakable fate because of what Linden had tried to do to him earlier. Granted, she was out of her mind at the time and not fully responsible for her acts. Yet I wonder if he's the only Haruchai in history to nearly be killed on purpose by the person he was trying to protect.

And Hergrom didn't even rate a decent burial..."He failed." I admire the heck out of the Haruchai most of the time, but this judgment of Brinn's made me want to shake him.

Oops, that was me.

For me, the single most tragic, gut-wrenching part of any of the books had to be the fall of High Lord Elena in The Illearth War. Her death left me reeling; I remember being in a kind of depressed state for several days after reading the book. I was like Hile Troy, willing Elena to somehow win against Dead Kevin. Didn't work.

The slaughter of the Unhomed. The Giants appeared to be peace-loving beings, and yet slayed by their kin (though possesed by Ravers) had to be the toughest way to Death. Some even stayed in their homes and just waited to be killed.

The other saddest part for me was closing the last book (WGW) after finishing reading it. (But on a glad note... the 3rd Chronicles in in the works! )

For me WGW bears the saddest moments. Sunder's miserable journey with Hollian's dead body, Caer-Caveral's death, TC's recital of Honninscrave's poem at the end, all brought tears into my eyes.

Totally agree with you there amanibhavam... Tears came to my eyes also at TC's death...

I agree with cheval, the slaughter at coercri was the saddest moment fo me. Especially the way that none of them fought it; all of those giants should have been able to overcome Kinslaughterer, if they'd tried.

I also remember finding the point where Lady Elif leaves the quest to return to the city surprisingly poignant.

What about when Seadreamer dies?

The Wounded Land...that whole book made me cry. The devastation of the Land nearly broke me. I remember thinking.."How COULD he!!!"

Not much here made me cry...the death of Seadreamer and the failure at The One Tree. I was mostly angry during this book. Nothing went right....
