I just finished watching Six String Samurai and wanted to talk about it, but I figured the chances of anybody else having seen it might be pretty slim. In any case, if you haven't seen this movie, I recommend renting it (never seen it anywhere but Suncoast, though. I got mine from netflix.). It reminds me a lot of Army of Darkness with a bit of anime flair to it.

So what are some of your favorite obscure or just strange movies?

I am very keen on independent American films. They are, other than contemporary literature, the best thing to come out of the States in my opinion.The most obscure film I love would be the Experiencer, but I cannot remember the director. I recall really liking Malpertuis also. It had Orson Welles in it. One of his last roles. I am not sure what counts as obscure really, because I always think everyone knows all the films I love and am (un)pleasantly surprised when they don't. Who directed Six String Samurai?

Dark Star, Bambi Meets Godzilla and Eraserhead: all great cult classics! (...and what's the famous one about the old woman and the young guy? Some title like Bill and Pat, or something like that-came out about same time as The Rocky Horror Picture Show... )

I love Dark Star, it is a great house party movie too, believe it or not. Or perhaps I have been to one too many house parties with electronics engineers! I have searched a great deal for the Bill and Pat reference, but cannot find anything. Maybe it never got a release outside the US?
Does obscure include stuff that isn't so obscure.but is arthouse, like Derek Jarman's films?

Swingers - this list is so money, and you don't even know it. Great soundtrack.

Have any of you seen 'The Winter Guest'. It's not obscure, but an indy I think. Alan Rickman directed it. Itis very beautiful and one of my melancholy favourites. My other two favourites off the top of my head are La Dolce Vita by Fellini and Dancer in the Dark by Von Trier. Both are profoundly beautiful and moving, especially the latter.

Want to see a great unknown film--it's called Tree's Lounge one of Steve Buschemi's (Fargo, Conair, Armageddon) 1st films-it's depressing as hell>needs to be part of a doubleheader followed by the great cult film: Barfly with Mickey Rourke and Faye Dunaway ("To all my friends!" ) >but it's a damm good and dark film!!

Yes I've seen The Winter Guest and it was quite good--I saw it about 5 years ago right before Simla's Sense of Snow which is an absolutely amazing movie!!! (now if you didn't respond so fast you could have seen the other great entries I made above^b4 they were registered as "edited" )

Danlo, I read today that Catherine Zeta Jones and George Clooney are doing a remake of Pat and Mike or Bill or whatever it was you said you liked but weren't sure (great English). Apparently it is circa 1952 and a romantic comedy. Is that the one? Are you excited by it all?
