come on, guys! it's my first thread! there's gotta be some fans here, it's been on the air for seven years now.

How about favorite melodramatic bad guy quotes? "Osiris serves no one. You, least of all." Or Teal'c one-liners? "Things will not calm down. They will, in fact, calm up."

I didn't even know there was a spin-off in the works. Decent show, Stargate. I've caught an ep here and there, but never enough to really get into it. To be honest, I probably would've gotten into it more if it hadn't been partially responsible for the early demise of Farscape.

Yeah, I was pissed off about Farscape too. But the morons running the network seemed more excited about "Tremors the Series" and "Scare Tactics" than any actually good shows like Farscape or Stargate. They seem to have since decided Stargate is good, since they only show it about a thousand times a week. I can't understand why they even have to "make room" for their new crap, most of what they air is filler anyway...

I must admit, I'm looking forward to seeing Atlantis when it airs. I like the original SG-1 a lot but I do sometimes wonder how many times they can realistically encounter a Goa'uld lord scarier than the one they blew up last season. So a new spin on it all will be welcome.

Incidentally, on the subject of Farscape, there's a four-episode mini-series in the works, which should tie up all the loose ends left at the end of the last show. Due out this autumn if I remember correctly.

Yeah, I think season 8 is going to be the last. Time to kick the bad guys' asses, once and for all ;)

I hope the bad guys in Atlantis ("The Wraith") are done better than they've looked from the previews so far... "Oh, they're blue and they hiss a lot" was my first impression. But these guys are TV veterans, they should be able to pull it off.

That's what I heard, except the release date. Anxiously looking forward to it!

It's mostly based on the movie, with a few details modified a bit. First thing is that the stargate can go to many, many destinations (pretty obvious). Ra described himself as a parasite that takes a human host, one of a few or perhaps the only remaining member of his species. In the show they're pretty much thriving, although there's some evidence they're in decline. The aliens themselves are called the Goa'uld (or "goulds" for short), small snakelike creatures that enter the host through the mouth or back of the neck and merge with the brain. They have genetic memory; all the memories of all their ancestors. Basically they have "the memories of a thousand Hitlers", and so they are inevitably evil. Like Ra they take on the personae of gods and use humans as slaves (as well as hosts) and also to incubate their larval offspring. Ra was their leader (in the context of the show) and when he was nuked in the movie, it unleashed a massive interstellar powergrab by the rest of the goa'uld.

They kept on the characters of Colonel Jack O'Neill and Daniel Jackson (with new actors obviously) and occasional guest appearances by other actors from the movie. Richard Dean Anderson plays Jack a lot differently than Kurt Russell did ("suicidally depressed" wouldn't have worked for the main character of a TV show, so they address his son's accidental death early in the first season so Jack can start being a smartass.)

I'm going to guess it'll be extremely easy to get into without much knowledge of the other show. It's off in another galaxy and they have new bad guys. They probably won't be able to get back to Earth in the first season (plot device to keep the two series separate while they're running new episodes concurrently) but they're supposed to be there finding new technology to help fight the goa'uld.

The backstory for the new show is that millions of years ago there was a race of beings they refer to as "the ancients". At some point they evolved into beings of pure energy that can pretty much do anything but tend to remain aloof from mortal affairs (very much like "Q" in ST:TNG, except mostly not evil). Dr. Jackson "ascended" to that level of existence during season 6, when Michael Shanks had some sort of contractual dispute, but was returned to human form at the beginning of the next season after "misbehaving". Atlantis, as we learned from the season 7 finale, was one of their cities before they left this mortal coil en masse.

So I'm watching the season premier of SG-1 (so far, so kickass) and they had a preview for the Farscape miniseries. It looked awesome. Said it's coming in October, subtitled "The Peacekeeper Wars".

Watched the premiere of Atlantis tonight... meh, we'll see. More Enterprise than Farscape, tho (and speaking of... trailer, woo!)

It was all right, for me it's always the characters that make or break a show (or a book), so I'll have to see if they grow on me.

Can't wait for Farscape... also I'm glad the rumors about a Battlestar Galactica series turned out to be true. I thought that was a damn fine miniseries, the best depiction of space warfare I've yet seen on television. They're doing Earthsea too... but I've never read that one.

I know what you mean on Farscape, I've been waiting with baited breath ever since the last show closed with "to be continued..."

It'll be very interesting to see how Earthsea works out, and what tone they take with it. As I remember, the initial trilogy was very much "boys adventure" in style, and with the exception of Arha/Tenar effective female characters were at a minimum; whereas the later and rather lopsided sequels were quite the reverse - there was a strong theme that men had bollixed everything up throughout and only the women could put things right. So I wonder how they'll play it.

Sci fi has really gone to the crapper, with Scare Tactics and that new Real World people living in a house rip off.

TLC has gone down the crapper too with all of the HGTV type of shows. While You Were Out, and Trading Spaces. ug.

Best Stargate SG1 eps, anyone? I'm in the mood...

...but I hate what happened at the end of Season 5 - even if they fixed it in Season 7. Seems like the show lost something around the end of Season 5, and never got it back.

I got a bit irritated as it became increasingly unlikely that the Stargate would remain a secret but it somehow did, but now that the UN security council are in on it I feel less so. And although I like the character of Daniel Jackson I thought that Corrin Nemec got a rough deal - being hurriedly written out and (on the evidence of his cameo in Fallout) being exiled to the planet of Bad Hair.

*points to signature* :p

Oh and those are great episodes, but I think my absolute favorite is Absolute Power from season four when Daniel takes over the world and destroys Moscow. It's fun.

That was a good ep. Evil!Daniel was pretty creepy. I think it highlights the fact the Michael Shanks has enough range to be something more than just Daniel.

I've watched every episode of SG1 since it started.
My favourite parts of Stargate are O'neill's little wisecracks ("will there be cake?") and T'ealc's one liners. The plots are also varied enough to keep me guessing, even if I do occasionally know what's going to happen from almost the beginning.

I've also seen all of the Atlantis episodes so far. I think it's managed to take the basic stargate theme, inject some very good humour into it whilst still managing to remain serious enough to be believable. Dr Mckay is particularly brilliant.
