Do we need an official SRD fanclub?

I mentioned to Romeo that perhaps it's time to start an official SRD fanclub. Neither he nor I are aware of one in existence at this time. To me it makes alot of sense to have a fanclub, but there are some downsides to it as well. Here are some pros and cons as I see it, feel free to vote and add to this as you deem necessary.

Pros:

1) An official fanclub would have officers who would be responsible for organizing periodic gatherings. For instance, we've been speculating already on the next Elohimfest, but so far no specific plans are in place. IMO a site for the meeting should be announced and preliminary plans made available to club members at least a year in advance, so personal plans for traveling, lodging, saving of finances, etc. could be started.

2) Starting a fanclub would allow for charter membership.

3) Newsletters, with detailed information relevant to a fanclub membership.

Cons:

1) Dues.

2) As Romeo mentioned, much of what the fanclub would accomplish is already being done here on the Watch, so a fanclub would be superfluous.

Suppose said club simply became an active branch or component of KW? Perhaps a forum could be created strictly for club business and so on. Just a thought. :D

Meh, I don't really see the point.

I think what strikes me the most is that so much of what a fan club does is taken care of by the Watch itself. The last fan club I belonged to was the Elfquest comic fan club (when I was eleven), and that was before the wonders of the world wide web. So I'm not sure that it's necessary.

However, I imagine there's lots of people who'd like a fanclub just so they could belong to it, and the idea of being a "charter member" of anything is enticing. So I don't have an opinion, at the moment anyway, but I think it's an interesting idea to consider.

The fan club concept is probably not quite as important for getting in touch with fellow fans as it used to be. This is mostly because of the WWW, but there is a lot to be said for actually having a formal organisation.

If we start a fan club I nominate Revan to be the treasurer. He's very familar with large numbers.

I wouldn't see the point. Apart from the organisation of gatherings, being a member of a fan club would give no advantages over just being a KW member.

One of the most important reasons for a fan club is to get one of those really cool ID cards with a little round Ur-Vile face as the logo in the upper left hand corner.

Good point - SRD may not be interested in this at all, which would make this discussion irrelevant. Perhaps Romeo could mention this to him.

A fan club? They've got Trekkies, so what will they call us? Stevies? Covies? Landies?

Foulettes: members of Despiser Youth Camp?
Chroniclites: sounds like a medical condition
Covenantians: never mind the Raelians, here come the Covenantians! Run for your lives!

I like the idea. It's true that Kevin's Watch already serves that purpose for the most part, but if I had to guess, I'd say making it official would increase membership, especially if there was a blurb or something for it in the books.

Nothing wrong with dues, either, as long as it's not excessive. I imagine Vain and Jay could use at least some help. And if not now, quite possibly when the new book hits the shelves. And if Elohimfest gets any bigger and more regular, I'm sure the organizers could use some funds.

Would it be a Donaldson Fan Club or a TC Fan Club?

I agree with that. If--and it's still a big if--there will be an "official" fan club, I wouldn't mind signing up, and I wouldn't mind paying a modest membership fee...as long as the money goes to the right people and doesn't end up as pocket change for some smooth operator in the Cayman Islands. (Not that I'm, er, cynical or anything.) I'm all for Vain and Jay running the fan club, but is that a given? Is it to be a transparent process, or will dubious politics decide the directorship of the club?

About Vain's question, I think it should be a Donaldson fan club. TC will undoubtedly be the reason for most folks joining, but having just a TC fan club is too narrowly focused.

Is Donaldson the dubious-looking fellow with the scraggly cat? or is it the handsome young glasses-wearing guy?
