Secret of Mana vs. Chrono Trigger

Both games have similar platforms, playability and graphics. Even the main characters look the same! Chrono Trigger has cool Tech attacks, while SoM has weapon level combo attacks. Chrono is turn based, while SoM is live action. Which do you think is better? I simply can't decide.

Chrono has a talking, medieval frog.

Mana doesn't.
Chrono wins.

You're basing your decision on a frog?!?!
Oh, it's you, Foul.
Makes sense....

Chrono Trigger was never available in the UK, so Mana is better

No contest - Chrono Trigger rocks. More replay value. Multiple endings. And a great game to play on emulation software!!
Now if you were to compare Final Fantasy V (english translation) vs. Chrono .... hmmmmm .... much tougher decision!!

Chrono trigger is much better...
SoM is far too easy.
~-Hierachy-~ If you disagree you're wrong.

When I first played SoM at the age of about 14, I got stuck for A YEAR. That's not easy. But then, I was an inexperienced RPGer back in those days.

Since this is my first time playing Chrono Trigger, I have to ask; I just defeated Flea the sorcerer(sorceress?), am I close to the end of the game? I hope I'm not.....

Not "a frog". Frog. Upper-case. Medieval. Has his own theme song. Heck, Chrono Trigger aside, I'd take Frog over Secret of Mana--or any game, for that matter.

Yeah he is pretty cool. You never answered my other question though. Am I near the end?

How should I know? I only played Chrono Trigger for like one day when I rented it in 6th grade. It's still one of my favorite games, though. I'm going to bed now.

According to a wlkthrough I just found on the net, it looks like you've still got a way to go.

Wow tough call...
Although I love CT's story, characters, and tech system...
I really enjoy SoM's real-time battles and weapon/magic system.
They both have awesome music and gameplay value.
I might have to go with CT, just because I seem to play it more often (unless I have a buddy to do multiplayer with... then SoM baby

)
And Flea is indeed a MALE... he simply prefers the default form of a female.

From
www.neoseeker.com/resourcelink.html?rli ... &rid=37139:
Much like Giga Gaia, if you prepare for this battle, it becomes one of the easiest
battles in the game... and if you don't, it's one of the hardest. Like the Golem
before them, the Golem Twins both have the Iron Orb attack, which halves a
character's HP, and they have the super-powerful fireball attack which will
probably kill any character just hit with Iron Orb. They also mimic any Elemental
attacks you use on them with counterattacks of the same Element... and that's your
key to winning. Equip your battle party with Rainbow Helmets and/or White Vests,
both of which either cut or absorb 50% of Lightning blows. Then charge into battle,
and make sure you don't attack the Twins with ANYTHING but Crono's Lightning spells
(Luminaire is perfect for this purpose, if Crono has learned it yet) or Lightning
Elemental Dual Techs (like Volt Bite and Spire). This way, the Golem Twins can
ONLY retaliate with their Lightning counter, which your party will absorb! You
won't even have to watch out for the Iron Orb and fireball attacks, because the
Twins will be too busy performing their Lightning counter to use them! But if you
want to steal both Magic Tabs, expect some harsh retaliation... otherwise, though,
using the strategy outlined above or one similar (with a different Element), this
battle is a cinch. If this strategy's not available to you, though, you're going
to have quite a hard time with these guys... good luck. (Although you COULD just
backtrack and get the Elemental armor...) Oh, one more thing: in true Dalton
fashion, both Twins will use the Bluuurp! attack before expiring, so keep your HP
higher than 300 (both attacks combined will do about that much).

They're quite simple really. The Golems actually use up a turn when they copy an ability, so if you constantly hit them with different attacks they will keep copying but never attack.
Example:
Have Chrono use Lightning 2
The Golems will copy lightning
Have Marle use Ice 2
The Golems will copy over to ice
Have Lucca use Fire 2
Now the Golems will copy fire
Keep that up and they'll never get an attack in (until the two BURPS at the end).

How can you even compare the two? Its like comparing the Chrons to The wizard of oz. Secret of mana is a good game, borderline great game, but Chrono Trigger is a masterpiece. Its the last game of its kind. It takes place in a world of magic, humor, despair, and hope. It is a game all ages can enjoy, but I as a late adolescent had a tear streak down my cheek when
we went to the future for the first time to see the destruction of Lavos. And those kids decide to save a future which is too distant to have any meaning to them. *sniff*
It is the last Square game not to take itself disgustingly seriously. (with the possible exception of FFVII) And that alone means a lot to me. However, it does this without harming the integrity of the world or characters. Its like an archetypal epic hero mentality applied to a 16 bit video game. (Like the Wagner ring cycle)
Note that I very well may be speaking out of my a**. Sometimes I can get a little to eloquent for my subject matter.

Dear god my heart was torn by that question... such indecision... eventually I had to go with chrono trigger as the better game....even though I enjoyed secret of mana more and longer, chrono trigger was more fun....but wow, put secret of mana up against Chrono CROSS and its SoM without a doubt. Also if it was Seiken Densetsu (sp?) III (secret of mana II) instead of Seiken Densetsu II (Secret of Mana I) I would go with soM
