I'm a huge fan of anime, though I don't own any (although, I borrowed my friend's DVDs of Fooly Cooly, and I must say it rocks).

Anyway, I made a killing off that Xbox, so I'd like to make a decent anime library (well, maybe just 5 or 6 DVDs to get me off the ground). Any recommendations would be most appreciated! Thanks! Foul out!

I wont recommend but I will tell you what I have got...

- Ghost in the Shell
- Akira
- Complete Neon Genesis Evangelion series and the End of Evangelion movie

... and I think they are all excellent

It is thoroughly disturbing. That's what makes it cool. Plus if you get to about the third or fourth volume, I forget which, there's a clip that will be familiar to any fan of El Sexorcisto.

Yeah those are just some. I love anime so much. Wolf's rain was the first one i saw, it totally rocks. I have other ones but their meant for younger watchers.

Princess Mononoke and Metropolis.

Those are the only ones I've seen but I do love them.

I've also found a cool site: www.find-dvd.co.uk, which'll look around online and find your best deal for any given DVD.

And let me just say I love, love, love Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli! Also: not anime, but I'm reading the Love Hina and Trigun mangas. Trigun's great, but doesn't dethrone Hina in my mind. Fine, fine manga.

Didn't really like Cowboy BeBop that much myself. Not that it was bad in any way you know, but it just didn't really do it for me.

Ghost in the Shell was great. Enjoyed The AniMatrix as well.

The Animatrix worked beautifully for me. I loved it because: a) it was Matrix-related, b) it showcased different anime styles, and c) it consisted of short films that allowed me to take in the anime in small doses. That's ideally how I'd prefer to watch anime, if and when I can be bothered to at all. I tend to avoid feature-length anime movies.

Akira was my introduction to Japanese anime (as I'm sure it was to many other North American filmgoers at the time). I admired it and thought it was a stunning piece of cinema, full of visionary and disturbing imagery I had never seen before in a "mere" cartoon. But I also thought it was over-the-top and more than a little incoherent, which are two criticisms that I still have about anime films today. Sure, I enjoyed Spirited Away too for what it was, but I suspect it would be enjoyed even more by the pot-smoking crowd, as the film would probably make more sense when you're viewing it stoned.

Meh, so many people talk about Ninja Scroll, but I don't find it particularly good. It seems a little pointless.

Update:

On the last episode of Cowboy Bebop. It might be my favorite series now--or at least a close second with Furi Kuri. In any case, I'm extremely endeared to the characters (Ed and Ein just kill me). I watched the movie (in chronological order, right after viewing episode 22). Can't wait to see how it all ends.

Incoherentness (is that a word?) is not a problem of anime, it's a problem of movies in general that are based on novels or graphic novels which offer too much content to be crammed into a movie. I'm sure you'd find the original Akira manga to be less lacking in this regard than the anime adapation.

Or if you have some more knowledge about japanese culture and folklore.

Miyazaki's target audience are the japanese, if viewers from other countries can enjoy his movies, that's fine, but for everything to make sense to, for every theme to be of interest to foreigners isn't on his list of priorities.
