Dreams

This is a deep question... But I'll ask it anyway... well... why do we have them? What do they mean? Are they trying to show us something? What do they siginify? What does an object in a dream have to do with real life?
I don't think these questions are easy to answer... We have to look deep into the human soul to know the answer to these questions...
heh, discuss away!

Dreams are a side-effect of the way our minds sort through the events of the day, which they do while we sleep.

Except when they're visions of the future

Dreams are a way for those people who are in prison to escape and remembering a better day or living in a fantasy as a better way whether it be to escape from a real prison or a prison of their mind or simply a prison of a life gone wrong be it by choice, cataclysm, bad luck, or wrong place wrong time.
It's my belief that dreams are a gift from God. There's very little reason for dreaming. Scientists suggest it to be as Murrin stated, a way for us to put together our experiences of the day. But Giraffes sleep for 2 minutes a day, while my cat sleeps more and more as life goes on for her, 10-14 hours now. My aunt has functioned on 4hrs a sleep for most of her 50 years. I've slept approximately 9hrs on average for most of my nearly 40 years. The difference isn't that she is better at putting her experiences to memory on the synapses, it's that she likes her life more than I do. I'm not suggesting that the giraffe is the happiest mammal on the planet. I'm suggesting that the scientific reasoning fails to explain this. I'm chalking this one up to proof of God's existence. You know for a fact that if we didn't dream, we would be forced to work 16 hours a day as a standard. At least 12 hours. So perhaps it is a daily form of the Sabbath, a time to just rest & a method to enjoy that resting time without it just being a sudden moment, a loss of time for that 8 hours.

Gift from God? Perhaps, but didn't you say in your dreams your face gets ripped off or something?
Personally, I think dreams are the brain's diagnostic tests, a kind of system scan. We usually have 3 or 4 every night, but the ones we remember are the ones we just woke up from. Or something like that. Read it on the magical Net.
Also, I think the reason dreams are so weird is cause the front part of our brain--the reason part--is in its "off" mode. Or something. I can't remember exactly. I recently had a dream where instead of getting a haircut, I got the top part of my skulls cut off, so my brain stuck out. Very stylish.

I broke my arm once. My parents divorced. I've been sick sometimes. I had my heart broke a few times. Bad things happen. But it made me aware of pain and sympathetic and empathic to people who have much greater pain than I have had in my life.
So when I dreamed about the demons wrecking my head, it helped me to feel sorrow for those who have mental illness and those that are in the clutches of demons.
Just because a thing isn't pleasant doesn't make it evil. If I lived in Hawaii where it's 80 degrees every day, I wouldn't be so happy when the sun came out. There would be no celebration of middle-spring for me. It would simply be another day.

Ah, gotcha. I see where you're coming from now; just need a bit of the old clarification. It's good you see value in those types of dreams; I've yet to find such value, myself, but I might, one day.
Time to veer off topic. In the aforementioned top-of-the-skull-getting-cut-off dream, I asked a doctor to help put it back on (or at least a freaking bandage to hide the brain). But what does he do? He calls a wild pack of dogs on me. This guy obviously didn't care about the Hippocratic oath. What's more, those freaking dogs were the size of horses! Good thing I don't die in my dreams (well, every time I'm about to die something physics-defying usually intervenes).

First of all you shouldn't be chalking anything up anywhere. It just becomes graffiti betweent fact and religion. Just because there is no explanation you credit God? Isn't this what the Greeks did, they saw something they could't explain and they say it was the work of one of thier many gods. You call them fools because you know that God exists, your faith tells you this. This is proof of only one thing, that we know the human brain very little. And your faith is proof of nothing. Just because a lot of people believe it doesn't make it true. There are plenty of examples I can give. But hey, I can't blame you, to be a good religiuos drone you must be closed minded. You give to much to God, he gets all the credit for everything. I hear "thank god" all the time, why not thank that person instead. You say God gives you free will. If he doesn't then he played no part in anything sence the dawn of man. Except for the prophets, the angels that killed a whole lotta people, and the people who had the "spirit of God" come upon them and they killed a whole lotta people. So then we should not be thanking God for anything except for the fact that he is not playing a role in anything for a long time because I kinda like it when there are no people who get the "spirit of God" in them and kill a whole lotta people. I mean no offence in what I have said, but this is a place for expression and if you can't handle it i suggest you limit your range in topic exploration.

You know, saying "I mean no offence" doesn't magically stop your illogical, irrational ranting from being totally offensive.

Illogial. I am pointing out the logical path and you call it illogical. I can see now that you are on the same plain as Zeph and you have a one track mind. i will try not to hold it against you.

Let's return to the topic of dreams, shall we, instead of making untenable personal comparisons?

Well said DragonLily.
Dreams? On the whole, I agree with Murrin, although, for me, its an interesting topic. You see, I don't really dream.
I know that I'm opening myself up to a lot of "...Of course you do, everyone does..."
But I don't have any conscious ones. With maybe two or three exceptions, I've never woken up with even the
sense that I've dreamed. When I sleep, time doesn't pass for me.
I close my eyes, and open them with no intervention of time. Whether I sleep for two hours, or eight, the transition is instant. It feels as though no time has passed while I slept.
I put this down to not having a visual mind. People who experience the phenomenon of "seeing" something in their heads have something that I don't.
If I imagine say, an orange, I don't see a little picture of it "in my head". I'm not even sure how that whole thing works. I can describe it, perfectly. But for me, it's like having a little bit of text read to me.
My memory works the same way. I don't see a little "video clip" projected inside my head, instead, it's like reading off a page that isn't there.
It's to this that I attribute my good memory. Afterall, text take up far less space than full sound and picture.
Anyway, my two cents, relevant or not...take it as you wish

Interesting thoughts, Avatar. I have a very visual mind. Just reading the word "orange" in your post brought to mind, first a swathe of the colour orange, then an image of an orange. I dream a lot, and time definitely passes for me when I sleep. If I wake with no sense of time having elapsed (as I do very occasionally) I feel quite uncomfortable. But I wake up a lot during sleep, so perhaps that has an effect.

I have no frame of reference for what you experience. I
know that that's how it works for most people, but I can't fathom the concept. I mean,
where does that picture appear? How can you
see something somewhere that isn't there (if that made any sense)?
Is it like engaging your "optical cortex" without any external stimuli? Can you see things "in your head" even with your eyes open? And if so, is it like seeing two things at once? Where does each "image" fit in?
The whole thing is very weird for me to even try and imagine. For me, it's more like hearing a voice telling me what an orange looks like. There's no picture at all.

heh, you've destroyed my thread.
What do dreams signify? <<< That's the main question I wanted to ask... What do they say about us? Not just dreams... but the contents of the dreams...
I mean every few months I get a dream of someone chasing me, and I'm running as fast as I can... but can't stop them catching me... I can't remember the actually visuals of the dream... but I remember what happens in it because I've dreamt of it loads...

Last night I dreamed about
sex

That doesn't happen very often. And I dread to think what it means

Usually I dream about things that are bothering me. Last night I dreamed about someone (you can guess) and it wasn't much fun. We argued.

No, it wasn't you

You know who it was

And it's not the first time I've dreamed about us arguing. Clearly that's on my mind.
