Ok, this question is probably a little pointless, but it has been nagging me for a LONG time. Who exactly is that next to Foamfollower on the Herring cover of TPTP *you can look at it on this site, for some reason I am not getting a link in the toolbar*

There seems to be some assumption that it is Covenant. There are several reasons why I don’t think its him.

One is that he is wearing a breastplate and has a sword. Covenant ready for battle? No way.

I just recently learned that all 6 of the Herring covers link to form one painting. This gives an entirely different view of the whole thing. How could Covenant be there? He is already *in* the painting on the cover of White Gold Wielder. If you think I am stretching it, put all 6 of them together and you will see what I mean.

Well, if it's not Covenant, then who the hell *is* it? No one but Foamfollower and Covenant were ever that close to Fouls Crèche (I assume that is what that place behind them is, complete with hotesh slay [sp?])

Well, I always thought it was Bannor. I *Know* he has a sword, and I *know* he was never that close to foul's crèche, but if you look at the whole mural, The covers seem to take a more symbolic meaning. Why do I think its Bannor? Well, who else could it be? Bannor seems to me to play a role comparable to the one Foamfollower plays. He also appears as he is described in the book, with a mustache (Don’t hold me to that, I don’t have the book in front of me), hair that is graying, and he is tending a Ranyhyn.

Well, there is my pointless argument. Any thoughts?

Heh. Well, the problem with cover art for novels is the fact that they're never accurate. Heh. The artist for the cover art is ususally not someone who has read the books, but have only been given a little information about the books to work with. As a result, we ususally end up with cover art that doesn't fit to the story exactly.

I'm pretty sure that the person on TPTP has to be Covenant, simply because the big tall guy has to be Foamfollower, heh. The fact he had a breastplate and sword is probably just artisit liscence, heh.

Just look at the cover art for the Wheel of Time series. The person who's supposed to be "Rand" on each cover is a different height and has different hair color on every book. And it was even all done by the same artist! Heh.

This is just another example of a bad cover, and we all know how much I love to complain about bad covers.

I actually don’t think the covers are that bad, if you put them all together and look. Makes it more epic feeling. Also it makes itself into more of an artistic interpretation of the series as a whole.

And cool, a n00b like me getting a response from the High lord himself! Makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

About the cover - I think it's all been said. Cover art is notoriously innacurate. Watch out for my rant about the new US covers for the Covenant books, with a yellow gold ring on the cover

Hmm, Is it possible to put I chrons on the right and II chrons on the left? All 6 are supposed to be one painting.

Bah, the landscape on my dad's copies is much better.

Thanks for pointing that out - fixed it.

My copies have a landscape running behind the main cover image (which is in a circle on the front of each (or in the single volume, on front, side, and back)) - the first chrons showing the Land from Revelstone to the southern mountains, the second chrons showing the same landscape, but under a desert sun. Better covers than most of those I've seen pictures of, IMO.

Yeah, that's the one my dad's got. His copies are from the early 80s.

They were printed again with the same art in the mid-90s, those are the ones I got. Can't seem to find a definate on who the artist was.

I have these ones. (although my second chrons is single-volume - same art, though).

Yeah, I think those are the best covers... so far. Those are the ones I own.

Hard to tell at the size of the pictures I'm looking at (and I don't have a copy of that edition handy to check out in detail), but it occurs to me that the wee feller on TPTP might possibly be Triock.

That's what I thought. Rather than being Covenant and Foamfollower at the end of the book, it seems to me that it's Triock and Foamfollower at the beginning.

Thanks for this. These are the ones I have in hardcover from way back when (1st Chrons - Richard Drew Publishing; One Tree - Sidgwick & Jackson; White Gold Wielder - Collins). Still my favourite set of covers of all the covers I've seen. Gives a real sense of scale and scenery, but with a hint of a scene in the book (esp Wounded Land, which I only have in pb version).

Any ideas where I might get a copy of the Wounded Land, hardback UK edition?

I would deffinatly say its either Triock or an obscure Bannor....the picture is not one scene in general...they never took a horse to Foul's Creche. Around the Creche it's all snow from the perpetual winter...not Hotash Slay. I'd say Bannor (for some reason wearing the attire of a warmark)
