What songs remind you of High School the most?
What bands and artist were popular when you were struggling to fit in or trying to make the varsity team? I was very much out of my element in High School. I really don't know how to classify myself other than a geek/misfit type. Too quiet to make much noise with girls (although I'm told quite a few liked me but I was too blind and awkward to have believed it then) and totally unable to find a niche that suited me. I spent most of my time bouncing back and forth from the burnouts to the nerds. Ugh.
Anyway the songs that, when played, conjure up feelings of High School nostalgia for me are:

I've been in a nostalgic music mood myself today, but it had to do with first year Junior High. I had little fondness for school after that. No songs remind me of High School. I guess I kept my enjoyment of music strictly separate from my experience of HS.

Around that time, I was "rediscovering" the Beatles courtesy of my sister, who had her own place and a spiffy new piece of electronics--a CD player! She was an early adopter of this technology. Anyway, the first CD she bought was the Beatles' Revolver, so that was the first CD I ever listened to. She went on to buy all of the reissued Beatles albums on CD, and I got to listen to all of them. That period in '87-'88 was one magical mystery tour.

Then she got into Beethoven, and so did I. Thus began an intense classical music period in my life. I basically paid no attention to what was going on in the pop/rock scene during the last years of the '80s, except for the exploits of Sting. After the Police had said their unofficial goodbye with Don't Stand So Close To Me '86, I honestly didn't give a hoot what other rock music was out there. Between them, the Police and the Beatles ruled my rock universe. But I was loyal to Sting, and he rewarded my faith with great music of his own. His album "...Nothing Like The Sun" was like an apotheosis that summed up the twilight years of the '80s for me. Meanwhile, Beethoven's symphonies blasted onward...

What does all that have to do with High School memories? Nothing, save for the one teacher who understood my passion for classical music. It's no surprise that I kept in touch with her after HS. I respected her far more than I respected my fellow students, that's for sure. But that's another story.

When I was a sophomore in 2000 (I think), Led Zeppelin was the musical choice of the varsity football team. I often heard them going "Been a long lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time". Of course, there was a debate every once and a while if Guns and Roses were better than Led Zep, but that was quickly ended in Zep's favor, of course.

Most of the music kids listen to today sickens me more than disco and the 80s combined, because the "music" is actually trying to be serious, as if it's not aware it's completely self-absorbed product. Guess I'm getting old and grumpy.

I, too, enjoy the company of teachers more than students, unless the students are as cultured/jaded as me (three of them are my best friends, now).

MM, after reading your post I suspect there is a lot about your experiences in High School that were less than pleasant. I think I can identify with your feelings if not your circumstances.
I think I'll start the "Who hated High School?" Thread.

Here's ancient history considering the fact that ALL the rock stations ever played during my sophomore year was Maggie May and Stairway to Heaven they, indelibly, are that. Thank goodness for Yes, C, S, N & Young, The Allman Bros, The Jeff Beck Group, The Mahavishnu Orchestra, The Greatful Dead, Frank Zappa and Pink Floyd or I think I would have lost my mind!

I was also a 1982 graduate.

We voted a song from Pink Floyd's The Wall as our class song (I will let all of you guess which one ) but the school admins made us change it, so it became Lynard Skynard's Free Bird instead.

Hey, TOM, I swear I didn't receive any tip from dAN, in case you were wondering.

I won't bore you with the elaborate scientific formula I used...but let's just say Styx's Too Much Time On My Hands seemed to be on the radio every single day around that time. It's a good song, but it's not that good. Ugh.

danlo, I heard Maggie May so much as a kid it's been etched into my brain. In a good way, though. It's one of the all-time great songs. Thing is, Da Ya Think I'm Sexy? is also etched into my brain. Folk hero Rod vs. disco Rod. What can I say? I just absorbed whatever my sister was listening to at the time. No, I'm not doing the "blame your sister" angle. I had a good time and am quite fond of the music that came out of the late '70s disco era (much to the horror of my fellow Watchers, I'm sure).

MM, I didn't think for a second that you enlisted assistance from the likes of dAN. I have grown to respect your intelligence and creative prowess enough to have assumed you reasoned the answer on your own.

Rod Stewart? Unfortunately I first realized I was listening to Rod Stewart when I was being assaulted by “Do you think I'm sexy”. That pretty much ruined it for me. The man could do nothing right in my eyes since then.

duchess, it is very cool to find you graduated the same year that dAN and I did. D: I don't recall Chamberlain High School class of '82 having a class song but I wouldn't be at all suprised if it was also Free Bird.

I'm a Jeff Beck/Faces Rod Stewart guy--I really didn't like anything he did on his own (because Maggie May drove me batty) and I didn't like Tonight's the Night because it came out 2 months after Neil Young's great album by the same name--so I thought he was ripping it off. But that one song about Georgie (the gay kid who died, right?) was fantastic! I actually like his Great American Songbook reditions. So now it's come full circle and I'm getting old--pass the Geritol please....

I was 1 year out of High School

The Doors!! Their first album came out the summer after my freshman year, and it was played over and over at summer camp. I can still see the whole scene vividly when I think of the first time I heard Light My Fire. To possibly repeat myself : The Doors are one of my all time favorite groups.

Then there was Steppenwolf's Born To Be Wild.

Okay, Joy officially had the coolest high school experience.

Wow. This has to be one of the most mature boards on the net. Usually just being in college puts me in the top 90% of all age groups on any forum. I guess that explains the top notch grammar and spelling here. ( not to mention the complete lack of 1337 5P33K)

Just finished High school last year, so its really too soon to tell. But the songs that I think will always remind me of high school in the future are "I believe in a thing called love" by the Darkness, and that Jet song. I cant remember the title. (I am not professing any love of these bands, I just think I will remember them.)
