Did he command his armies? Can't remember. I remember him joining up after Joyce gave him the opportunity to exact revenge on the (Cadwal? Alend?) who raped his wife, but don't remember if it specifies his position.

I agree with this, Avatar. The Castellan is the commander-in chief.

I always assumed he was the captain of the castle guard / whatever. Historically, a castellan managed a castle, so that was always the interpretation I put on the rank.
