I haven't heard anything about this movie. A sequel to Willie Wonka, I presume?

It's a remake -- and I hope this one will be more like the book!

Man, I loved that book when I was a kid...

Yeah, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (not Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory) is the title of the book, so I assume this adaptation will be closer to the book.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the book (and The Great Glass Elevator), but the movie.....Sorry, it's like sacred ground to me, especially the last line...

"Did you hear what happened to the man who got everything he wanted?"

"No."

"He lived happily ever after."

Just wonderful.....


Oh, and Johnny Depp is completely wrong for the part.

It's my understanding that the Remake is supposed to be much more faithful to the book, then Gene Wilder's version was.

As far as Johnny Depp being completely wrong for the part, I've never read the book, but, Johnny Depp has a fantastic acting range (Even though as I person I don't think much of him) and I could easily see him turning in a very good performance in the vein of Gene Wilder's performance (Is Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka close to the book, and it's just the script of the original that was considered so far off of the book?)

It's a Tim Burton film too, i didn't know that! I bet it'll be great!

Here's my problem with Johnny Depp. In my opinion, He's only been really good in one movie: Blow. His second-best performance was Nick of Time. Pretty much everything else....Bah. He looks like he's acting. Wait, I'll give him Gilbert Grape too.

It's my opinion that there's no way that Depp can pull off Wonka, as played by Wilder, or as written by Dahl. Now, add in the completely overrated Tim Burton (who peaked in 1988 with Beetlejuice), and this is a recipie for disaster.

Have you seen Bennie and Joon, Depp was great in that too, not to mention all the other stuff he's been in. And Burton. Maybe he's just an "aquired taste" as they say. I'll stop here otherwise i can see we'll be arguing over this all night.

Seen B&J, seen all of Burton's stuff, just not my cup 'o tea. I despised Batman, Sleepy Hollow, and The Planet of the Apes. Big Fish was so-so. But look at Depp's filmography....It's chock full of awful films. Awful films that he didn't distinguish himself in. The Ninth Gate? I wanted to claw my eyes out. From Hell? It certainly was. The Astronaut's Wife?
FWIW, I was (way 'back when) a film major, so I'm not a complete dunce when it comes to movies. The only place I'd like to see the Depp/Burton team is at the bottom of a very deep, aligator-infested chasm.

Edit-I just re-read this, and it may sound like I'm implying that you are a dunce about movies lhaughlhann. Not the case. Just trying to avoid someone commenting, "well, maybe if you 'got' Burton's films".

Hey, no problems there. Each to his/her own.

IMHO, both Depp and Burton can be patchy and inconsistent, but at their best they are both brilliant.

Johnny Depp may not dissapoint the new fans - the ones who did not grow up with the original musical. If he can take on the fun loving craziness of Gene Wilder and if this won't be a musical - it's possible it will fly like a Great Glass Elevater charmed by A Big Friendly Giant, powered by the Magic Finger...

Do we forget Burton's crowning achievment "PeeWees Big Adventure"?

It's funny, everything I've read says that the new film will be more faithful to the book (darker), which is normally a good thing, but again, how can you top the first film?

And more importantly, why would anyone want to try?

i love the first, but can't wait to see what Burton does with the material. and I love Depp. though I would have chose Steve Buscemi for the role.
