I have just finished runes and feel like slitting my wrists, what happens if SRD dies before he completes it? I hope he has a son called christopher!

Even after the two chronicles were finished and we didn't know if there was to be a third, that didn't prevent us from (re)interpreting his writings in many directions he probably has never thought about.

It's just a story.

We suffice.

I'll miss him for what he was and shared, not for what he didn't.

It would suck if SRD left this world before the Last chrons was finished. I'm betting he'll be around long after the final book is published and thats good enough for me.

He has already answered this in the GI. He's never going to die!

Yeah, Remember the Stephen King shocker!?? Almost died from getting hit by a car ouch. Just think about the Dark Tower Series! Ouch.

I think there's a simple answer to this question. If he dies before he completes the books, then it's highly likely that work on them will cease.

Then his problems will be bigger than those of his frustrated readers.

I hope he doesn't have a son named Brian.

At Foyles Book Store in London, Stephen Donaldson guaranteed not to die, but could offer no assurances that WE won't die before he finishes it!

Hah! That made me laugh!

He also said that his notes are so crazy and scanty and that no one else could ever put a book together from them!

For example, he says he writes a single word, such as

and by that he remembers a huge deal of something!

Stephen Donaldson is not Frank Herbert - there will be no notes found in the garage or in a bank safe-box! There shall not be any replacement authors!

We will get these books from Stephen, or we won't (and there has to be other things than death that might stop him!) - c'est la vie - and I have to say I happily and totally agree with his cheerful attitude about this!

I like this man! He treated this embarassing question with such good humour and his whole attitude to this matter was one of such healthy nonchalance I have to love the guy! He knows what is not essential, and is very cheerful about it!

He's in his early 50's and by his own statements, in good health. I don't think there is anything to worry about at this point.

Now, how about if he gets some kind of early onset dementia?

I hope he does save his notes.
After the 3rd chronicle ends I'd love to see where he might have gone with the whole thing.
All the ideas he dropped and how things changed and why.
That's all good stuff.
It doesn't take away from his story either.

Post it on the net if no one will publish it.
But I'd buy it in hardcover, damn-it!

Stephen, if you read these forums..... please write the last chapter and put it in a bank vault. Then if something should happen, it can be released as a memorial edition and we can fill in the rest.

Minor quibble: IIRC, he was born in 1948. Doesn't materially change your point even if I am remembering correctly.

Actually, I believe you ARE correct. Mid 50's then. Thanks for the correction!

He's 57. Born in 1947.

Guys, let's not get carried away here, seriously. My ex's father is in such poor health - everything that could go wrong has gone wrong - and the old guy is still kicking. I had given him up for dead six years ago. He's even tried to kill himself. It's astonishing. He wants to die, and he can't.

I'm going to open myself up here quite severely, but this has been talked about so much on the Watch, in interviews, and in the GI, that I feel compelled to speak somewhat openly about a private matter. But don't e-mail me asking for details. You won't get them. (As if anyone will care!)

I should have been dead ten years ago, and frankly every day is a miracle that I'm not dead or getting closer to it. Instead, I'm in great health (relatively). What keeps people going in these situations is desire. For me, it's my own writing. I will not die until: 1) my first children's/young adult book is published; 2) my more serious young adult series is published; and 3) my adult "epic" is published (and I think that will be at least two trilogies, at least as it's currently mapped out). #1 is just around the corner. #3 is at least twenty years off, and I'm 38. But it will be written. I would imagine that the same drive holds true for our good friend SRD.

The publishers would probably find a way to get the works he didn't finish out.

SRD has said that nobody knows what he is going to do next.

I think the pubishers have to know, don't they?

As it should be.
While it is enjoyable to guess at what could happen, certainly SRD is going to stun us with his revelations. He has proven time and again that his imagination is boundless. This time will be no exception.
