I think that Robert Downey JR would make a great Covenant. He is a weasely guy that everyone loves to hate. He is high profile enough to get noticed. If not RDJ then maybe Steve Buscemi.

I have to disagree. I just don't see either of them in the role of Covenant. And I'd never describe TC as weasely...

I totally agree with Murrin, RDJr. nor Steve Buscemi are good choices. It has to be someone who can portay a world of internal and external pain, haggard, yet able to evoke inner strength, determination and power. I always thought Harrison Ford could have done this about 10 years ago (for the first trilogy), now he is the right age for the second...

Yeah, you're pretty much describing Downey there. Haggard, inner strength, etc.

Harrison Ford? Um... no. Too vanilla.

I don't believe I've ever seen Harrison Ford demostrate an ability to portray the range and power of emotion I think would be necessary for Covenant.

Maybe it's just because I've never really liked Robert Downey Jr that much, but I honestly don't believe he could do justice to the role.

In the first post it talks about someone 'everybody loves to hate' - I like Covenant. I alway have. He may not have been entirely agreeable right at the start, and he made some bad decisions because of his stubbornness in the First Chrons, but he's never been someone I could hate - Covenant is a good man who's been through some hard times.

Great Scott! Downey would be perfect, though he's starting to get a little long in the tooth (IIRC, TC is about 30 in the first trilogy). But man, he's definately got the range.

I think of him as a weasel because it should not be such a trying and confusing thing to help such a wonderful world of people (Book 1). The reluctant hero is despicable. We all have hardships in our lives but we keep trying. I have seen the face of death many times, yet I still keep moving forward optimistically.

TC faces a world of hate due to his illness; he is literally a leper. But the worst leprosy that he faces is in his own mind and in the way that he chooses to deal with his problem. No matter how horrible the situation and no matter how much it is out of our control we will always be in charge of our reaction to it. He is a weasel.

Back to topic. Harrison Ford has played the same roll in almost every movie that he has been in. The same can be said of many actors, Kevin Costner or Al Pacino for examples, they just keep recycling their own personalitites into each new roll. Robin Williams, Brad Pitt, Robert Downey Junior and Steve Buscemi represent actors that have had a variety in their acting lives. This is important because representing TC is going to be nothing like other actors have done before, he rapes a girl in the first book for an example. The actor has to be willing to be hated and TC defies our generic sense of a hero, he is despicable.

Robert Downey Junior has had a rough career, starting off as a silly boy in the movies and progressing to a serious adult. The only other actor that has done somthing similar is Brad Pitt, who single handedly vaulted himself from surfer to serious method actor. Robin Williams and Steve Buscemi have done it all as well but I don't think they would be good choices.

This is, of course, assuming that someone famous has to be chosen to be TC. My first choice would be to find a good actor out there that is not already type cast. Give him a new chance to play the role of a lifetime.

My final subjective thoughts on the subject:
RDjr. has not power as an actor; the ability to rage at the world with a look, and then later expel that visceral pain with words.
I still think Harrison Ford does. Two examples can be found in the movies: "Mosquito Coast" and "Witness'.

There a a few actors with the "chops" to play TC, Downey and Depp among them. Maybe that guy in Alexander (Colin?), and Maaaybe Brad Pitt. But if Downey can make me believe that he's Charlie freakin' Chaplin, why not TC?

Yeah, I don't know what it is I don't like about Downey. He scares me, but not as bad as Tony Danza or Ted Danson.

We want people to at least take it seriously. I think RDJ is serious enough to do it, but maybe Buscemi would be better.

I don't think Kevin Spacey could fit the physical make up of Covenant, but he would do a good job.

I'd prefer TC to be played by an unknown, as well as all of the main characters, but if we cannot get good acting out of the unknowns then I think that Robert Downy Jr. would do a pretty good job. TC is a dark character & if you see Robert Downy Jr. in "Less than Zero" he is certainly capable of darkness & regret. I think he would do great at it. He's good at playing characters that aren't necessarily evil per say but that end up doing things that even his character would rather not do. Very good choice.

Let's see, what would Hollywood do to "fix" TCOTC...

1) Lena is not raped. Instead, it it her pure, untrammeled love that inspires TC to save the Land. Eventually, they will return to Kevin's Watch in victory, where Covenant will declare that he feels like "the King of the World!"

2) Leprosy will be replaced by something more likely to provide a tie-in to Oprah - ADD, perhaps.

3) The Bloodguard will use weapons. This will provide for much wider merchandising possiblities. Also, instead of quiet stoicism, each Bloodguard will have his own "wacky" quirks. Bannor will be played by Nathan Lane.

4) In a nod to some of the foreign translations of the book, the Giants of Seareach will, in fact, be a rebellious, happy lot of Pirates. Saltheart Foamfollower will be played by Johnny Depp.

5) The Ranyhyn will talk. Most of them will be voiced by Eddie Murphy.

6) No Tom Bombadill.

I certainly hope you don't work for a movie studio, Plissken.

In keeping with that, I'm thinking there should be a musical number with the Bloodguard. After all, we don't want to waste Mr. Lane's talents...Maybe even a "West Side Story"-ish sort of thing with cavewights and ur-viles.

Well, this goes without saying. The Chrons are pretty much lillywhite, so this must be done to give the film "street cred".

Please don't call them giants. They prefer the term "big people."
