Hmm... I don't remember feeling that way in BH. But the books are blending together in my head at this point, so I really can't say for sure. heh

I just finished this book about 10 minutes ago, and gotta say it's one of my favourites, up there with DHG and HoC. As soon as I finish Midnight Tides (which I started 5 mins ago), I'm gonna have to reread the series in the right order this time. :D

dude, it almost doesn't matter what order you read in. honestly, i've been reading back and forth through the series since my first chronilogical read from GotM through TtH.

i backtracked after reading The Return of the Crimson Guard and then began to read forward again then backtracked further and now reading forward again.

am now on my 3rd read of RG and there are things i just cannot suss out.

for instance, who is Icarium's father that Bugg talks about, the jaghut. does he mean Gothos? (yea i know its the BH thread but who cares, its all related anyway.)
so remember when icarium gets to letheras and scale house falls down when he steps off the boat? then a few pages later we see Bugg's reaction to that. he's stunned and dazed and starts thinking to himself about icarium arriving there and what consequences it may have and he says something about "the history of this land" etc. what's he talking about?

and you know why i'm re-reading RG again? because for the life of me i can't remember
Spoiler
what happens to the sword after karsa chops rhulad's arm off!!!
lol!!

but i just finished TtH's for the 3rd time and i he didn't have it there so, where the heck did it go. i forget.

also, who did Bugg introduce those hapless stupid letheri guards that were harrassing him? 8O

Yeah, I must say I haven't been particularly bothered by reading them backwards...it's not a chronologically linear series anyway. In the intro to RG for example, you see what happens to Bloodeye, and right now in MT they're

standing at the site of his crushed skull.
Like GotM, some things make sense only when you've read further. (Which is the real reason I'm gonna be reading them again...sure I'll pick up plenty of stuff that seemed insignificant (or incomprehensible) at the time.

I finished this one a few days ago and - as usual - I'm confused about a lot of things. :D

For one thing, which side is Spite on? First, she helps free the D'vers so that Mappo Trell can be replaced as Icarium's keeper, and then she's sailing with Cutter, Mappo, Heboric's corpse, and Kalem's brother for the shores of the Otataral Desert.

The drunken Sargeant can't even recall the Priest of D'Rek's face when he disappears from Kartool, but she recognizes him instantly on the Streets of Malaz City months later in the middle of the night.

Oh yeah. Spite and Envy. Not much for sibling rivalry, those two, huh?

I love Hellian. 8)

His cousin. Sorta. (Probably just members of the same tribe and only distantly related.)

Good point about Hellian...it wasn't just her that couldn't remember the ex-priest, in fact, it seemed to be some sort of spell or something that caused it. So how did she suddenly recognise him?

barathol? i think he's his brother. i'd go with cousin (definitely not uncle, ali! lol!!) but i seem to remember them speaking to one another in DG. something having to do with that...er...book or whatever it was that goes eventually to Sha'ik. the one that supposed to start the apocalypse?
or am i getting characters mixed up?

regarding hellian...she's a "talent" isn't she? i've just assumed so all along. she's certainly not just favored by oponn!!

(bellam and rallick nom are cousins tho)

Are we thinking of the same Mekhar guy? I'm thinking of the one they (Apsalar, Heboric, and the gang) stumbled on in that little village after they fled the Apocalypse. A cousin, really?

Where's Murrin when you need him, anyhow?

Barathol was never in DG.

Hellian is interesting. She's frighteningly competent as an officer when sober, and completely terrified of being that person, heh.

Clearly I can't keep *any*thing straight in this series anymore. Bah. I'll attempt another re-read eventually...

My impression was that a spell was at work here, but I really need a reread.
