I am a new here, but I enjoy lurking more at the moment given the quality of your posts.

Anyways, I've tracked down 2/3 of the second trilogy at a used book store, I have a couple more to check when I have the time. I figure I'll find the first book eventually.

But I am curious if there ever was a hardcover edition for any of the first three books, because I am wondering what my chances are of tracking such a thing down.

I figure I still have some time until the next book comes out, and I figured I'd catch up on the details of 'The Land' and it's history. For now I am reading through Reave the Just and other Tales.

There are hardbacks available. The book club edition is the easiest to find. Go to ebay. Lots there at reasonable price.

I recieved a hardback of Lord Foul's Bane about 5 years ago.
I ordered it through B. Dalton's and took about a week to get it in.

That sounds like something worth a try. Thanks for the idea. I wasn't sure if such things were orderable anymore.

I'm sure you could get them off ebay too.

I have both the 1st and 2nd Chrons in original first edition hard covers and paperbacks. So, I'm sure there are copies out there.

I dug up a copy of The Power that Preserves in my local library's book sale section... dust jacket is gone, but it's in pretty good shape otherwise. Saw several copies of all three First Chronicles in a used bookstore, but they were unreasonably priced (LOL, and I was out of money). I've seen so many copies of The One Tree in used books, though... have three, myself. *shrug* Packrat.

Amazon.com's private dealers will probably have hardbacks, too. The shipping is about 3 or 4 bucks, but you can get the actual books for something like 50 cents every once in a while, so if you shop around I'm sure you will find more copies than you know what to do with.

Yeah, when I look for SRD books in a used book store, I seem to only find hard cover versions of The One Tree and White Gold Wielder. I've found a few other good things a used book stores too, like Gildenfire, that atlas book, and some other random editions of Covenant. Used book stores are fun like that.-jay

BTW, I have discovered that there are hard covers and there are good hard covers.

Many of the "book club" editions are somewhat shabby, in that they have inferior paper, and the paper edges are not trimmed uniformly, making it look like all the pages had fallen out and they were not glued back in quite well.

If I could do it all again (and perhaps I might) I'd go for non-book-club editions.

Richard Drew Publishing produced hard cover versions in UK in 1983 which I was lucky enough to get. The covers are from the Fontana paperbacks editions (Peter Goodfellow illustration).

Arturia, where those in the large format as per Fontana editions? Don't think i'v seen those ones. I've got a set of the 1st chrons by the Molendinar Press which also have the Goodfellow art on hardcovers which are beautiful but not in the best condition.

The availability and pricing of Hardback editions of the 1st chronicles varies depending on whether you want 1st editions, Book Club Editions or other.

The very 1st edition, 1st printing of Lord Foul's Bane was actually issued by the Science Fiction Book Club and has the the 'gutter' designation "H21" on page 403, this was followed with 'gutter' designation "J02" on page 403. Holt/Rinehart/Winston had a problem with the dust jackets on 1st trade edition and its 1st printing came out after these two. All of these have S.C. Wyeth art work on the dust jacket.

Shortly after these were a Nelson DoubleDay Book Club editions where the artwork changed to ones by Janice C. Tate.

The rest of the books, the 1st editions are rarer and harder to find than book club editions. But in general, the are all getting more difficult to locate.

In general, 1st editions\1st printings are the rarest, those that are signed by Donaldson on the title page are the rarest of the rare. Condition of the books and dust jackets also effect the value or cost. Stickers, Author's Signature on a bookplate sticker rather than the front page, and price clipping can also detract from the cost/value.

Two non-1st editions of the SF book club set of the 1st Chronicles just recently sold on ebay for $ 50 and $ 85 (S.C. Wyeth art).

Geez there are all sorts of old hardbacks floating around used bookstores in Albuquerque--and I have seen one or two with SRD's signature in them--new carreer possibility! Ca-ching! Now if I ever went to Ebay I'd prob make a fortune!

Yes, they have the Fontana covers by Goodfellow. I got them back in 83/84 I think and they are still in pristine condition - they only come out every few years when I want to read something really good.

I've got UK hardcover originals of TOT and WGW but cannot for the life of me find TWL, despite book shop searches, EBay searches etc. Will find it one day ...

I've had hardcovers of the 2nd series since they came out but my
trade edition paperbacks in the slipcase should likely be replaced
so I'l check out ebay and half.com.

Speaking of half.com, I just recently replaced my paperback versions
of some other Donaldson books by checking both ebay.com and half.com.

I ended up getting the majority of the GAP sequence as well as
"The Man Who Fought Alone" and "A Man Rides Thru" (all replacing
well worn paperbacks) for reasonable prices on those websites.

Now hopefully I can get hardcovers of the first Covenant series and
complete my Donaldson collection.

Yup, the first trilogy definitely came out in hardback. The first time I ever read it was when I checked out the hardback copies from the library. The cover art is pretty bland though, IMHO. I'm not a big fan of Sweet's work but at least his covers are a little more interesting.

They've made hardcore porn out of each of the Covenant books up to the latest books.

The first was Lord Foul's Thang, followed by The Illearth Whore, ending the first trilogy with The Penis That Deserves.

The second Chronicles were The Wombed Land, The One Bush and ending with the fantastic Pearl Necklace Wielder.

I hope those that made them do versions of the Last Chronicles....
