This is a true classic. The Count is one of my favorite all-time characters. Anyone else a fan of this novel?

I wasn't a big fan of this one by Dumas. It was one of the later ones of his I read. I loved!!!!!! The Three Musketeers, and I have a collection of his short stories which are pure gems.

Enjoyed the book immensely, and thought they did a good job with the film.

I thought this a much, much better novel than it is often given credit for. In fact, I even wrote a screenplay adaptation of it (which I simply called Monte Cristo) that emphasized some points that really seemed vital to the story for me.
Especially, the fact that Edmund learns to forgive, or at least let go of his hatred. And of course he doesn't destroy anyone without their knowing who did it. I mean, what's the point of revenge if your victim doesn't know who's responsible?

This was one of the first classics I ever read for pure pleasure. And what a pleasure! Innocence, love, lust, imprisonment, escape, buried treasure, revenge, hatred, revenge, more lust, revenge, more love, revenge revenge revenge....Only imagine if the Count of Monte Cristo's powerrs were used for Evil!

I have a ridiculously abridged version... I didn't realize it was abridged until I saw my friend's copy

I think I'll borrow that one...

That's the worst. That happened the first time I read Little Women. I was ticked when I found out that I wasn't reading the whole book!

I just wrote this down on my "to read" list, based on what I've read above. I really enjoyed the most recent film incarnation.

The best adaptation (forget Hollywood fluff!) is the French version with gerard depardieu (sorry if that's spelt wrong). Wonderful stuff.

This is a great book, and I agree that the best adaptation is not the Hollywood one (which I actually found sadly lacking in many respects) but the french one with Gerard Depardieu. That's also because that adaptation was a mini-series for a total of about 8-10 hours, which is the only way to do justice to a book of this size.

I have to agree.
