1. Does anyone know where to get an English version online either free or at little cost?

2. Does anyone know how to use it and are they willing to give me helpful hints and advice??

My computer came with PhotoImpression 4, so that's the one I know. Works fine for me.

Sigh... thanks anyway. I have Photo impression 4 also... but i wanted to go and play with the big boys. Is Edge is here??? I reckon he must have it due to the fact that he does these wonderful avs

I know how to use Photoshop ..... been using it for about 12 years now ...... although i do not have the latest version as they are too tight to buy upgrades here at work . . . and so far they have not gotten bored of my issesant moaning re:' the importance of remaining cutting edge'
So i may be able to help with queries.
Not sure where you can get it on the cheap though .........

Personally, I use Paintshop Pro, (v8.1). Prefer it to PhotoShop, (but probably because I'm more familiar with it.)

You can download a full version evaluation copy from www.Jasc.com, (50 megs download though, so if you're on a dial-up it can be a bit harsh), that's good for 60 days.

Then you can either buy it, (IIRC $99) or try something a little less legal.

Or you can just buy it straight off, and they'll send you a CD.

Not much help I know, but there you go.

You should get into Photoshop . . . industry standard. Its easy . . . . . start with the 'File, Open' option top left . . . . and off we go.
you will see the toolbar to the left of screen with lots of icons on it . . . if you 'hover' you mouse pointer over each icon it tells you what each one does. Clicking on it activates that option . . . and if you click and hold the mouse button down on it then it brings up extra otions which you can scroll through.
Layers window floating around is important as well, experiment hovering over stuff and clicking bits .....
Hmmmmmmm . . . its a vaste program though ..... tricky ....... you may need to go out and buy the book 'Photoshop for dummies' or check online for tutorials. Alas the only way is to get in there and have a play . . do not be daunted by the size of it . . . . a little like be a newbie on this here forum?!?!?!?

I was browsing around for about 2 months before i dared to post anything . . and it STILL seems a huge and daunting place to us new folk. In some ways it is quite off putting to be playing with the big boys/girls . . . . and i wonder if this puts people off posting . . it certainly frightened me ..........

Im the worlds biggest fiddler... I click buttons here and there and play with stuff, but my success rate is wayyyyy below 50%. Ive managed to edit the size of images, but the whole layering thing is beyond my comprehension.

What i basically want to do is to create a new banner for my forum by adding images and text to a background and add gradients or some other cool effects. I dont know how to manage the layering thing.

I actually have a electronic copy of Photoshop for Dummies but I think I need the Photoshop for Dumb Dummies version because its all chinese to me.

( I would gladly donate stuff in exchange for helpful advice and guidance )

Layers are easy.

Just imagine that the background of your picture is covered by a series of transparencies, like for overhead projectors.

You can "overlay" the transparencies on your picture, without affecting the layer below.

Layers are not neccesarily vital to getting a picture, but it does allow you to play with various aspects without affecting the rest of it.

For example: Picture on the "background" layer, then text on Layer 1 allows you to move the text around easily, or apply different effects to it. If you change your mind, you can always delete the layer with text.

Remember that formats for the net don't support layers, so always keep an original of the pic in the default format: for photoshop, thats .psd

When you save it as a .jpg/.gif, all layers are merged, and you can't change them.

To practice, just create several blank layers, and paint on them, or apply effects/gradients to them. Use the "layers" window to make sure you're using the right layer. Anything you do will only affect the active layer, it takes a while to get the hang of switching between them.

I'm not even sure if the above website has any tips.
I just know that if I go there I end up spending about 3 days checking out all the amazing pictures.
(But they do have tutorials too)

I wish I had the time to become a master at it like those folks.
