I'm not sure how much I really have to say on this subject other than the title. Just wanted to rant, really. Y'know, I thought there was something going there towards the beginning of December... with the White Stripes and Queens of the Stone Age and such... heck, even the saliva stuff isn't too bad except for sounding like a strange commercial metal tears for fears cover... audioslave. granted, there's nothing really new going on, though some of the retro stuff has been well done.

but listening to the radio these days, it all sounds like a bunch of whiney, assinine crap. for instance, some band, a bunch of hacks, have some sugary insipid song out called Love Swing, i think the title is. i mean, it sounds like Nerfherder (ok, so most people probably haven't heard of these guys. '80s-ish nerd rock... i've seen that they do the music for Buffy) would sound like if Nerfherder took their music seriously (do an mp3 search for Nosering Girl).

and what is the deal with the new chili peppers song. at first i was thinking, "ok, it's just stream of consciousness work, no big deal." but the more i hear the song the more the simple baseline and the apparently random lyrics really start to get to me. i much more prefer the direction they went with Californication.

i've been waiting for the next grunge, the next Cobain... i'm getting impatient.

or am i just getting old?

I tend to avoid listening to the radio and prefer to pop a CD in. I'm afraid I'm going to be like my parents and question the sanity of my kids once they develop their own specific music tasts.

I fear my Cohen collection may well be fuddy duddy by then (if it isn't already )

There's nothing good on the radio. Of course, I have this net radio thing with some artist on demand thing, so it plays what I want.

Well, unless you're listening to the classic rock station in Atlanta--then yeah, radio sucks! I recall when I first came upon it: I was flipping stations when I ran across my favorite song. Next thing you know, I'm like, Well, this is my favorite song, so this radio station has to have something going for it. Next thing you know, I've got it on every night while reading ASOIAF or Covenant or Oprah's Book Club. Yeah, Oprah's Book Club. A Lesson Before Dying.

Most of our rock station are from clear channel. We do have one absolutely great jazz station, WEMU, out of Ypsilanti, one great rock station out of Windsor, Canada, one good local independent classic rock station from Detroit, and one independent hard rock station, also from Detroit, that I rarely listen to because the dj's are so gross.

Yes I agree! It's definitely different to where i thought they were going! It seems to be... well, pretty straightforward rock. Ballads...
But listen to the whole album. It's growing on me.

It's a great album. I was never a big Chilli Peppers fan until "Californication" and now "Bye the Way". Good stuff all the way through!

I know this is a very old topic, but still... Radio is absolutely appalling, and it's been striking me particularly hard lately. Maybe it's because I didn't listen to radio for a long time, but I now keep hearing it - it's just full of such insipid, soulless, nondescript, featureless pap. It's pants. And unless you have digital radio, there's no rock station - every radio station in the country has the same damn playlist. Argh.

I must admit to listening to Radio 4 every day. I don't know if the US has an equivalent, but it is fantastic. mm just thought, I suppose this doesn't count as commerial radio. You can't beat John Peel on a Monday night. It may not be trendy, but it is big and it is clever.

I haven't experienced it yet but I have a recommendation for all of you: XM. Research it.

Anyway, most radio is crap. But independent radio stations tend to be good and Boston's True Alternative FNX kicks ass (supposedly one of, if not the first, radio stations to play THE Smells Like Teen Spirit). They play new music that I see eventually get onto larger radio stations, plus they play "classic alternative" as it is called now: grunge, 90s alt-rock, etc., etc. Other than that, the rest pretty much blows. My dad seems to like a couple of local classical sations though.
