Ending of Runes

Hi, I'm new here, so I'm not sure if this has been discussed or not. I'm just curious, for everyone who has already read Runes,
Spoiler
how many of you think that the person Linden Avery sees riding toward Revelstone is really Covenant?

I mean, he told her several times not to trust him, and that to remember that he is dead. How could it possibly really be him?
Just wondering what other people think.[/spoiler]

Well, since the name of the forum says to expect spoilers, I'm going to talk freely here.

I'm fairly convinced that the person that Linden sees is NOT Thomas Covenant. Remember that the second book will be called "Fatal Revenant", and that the word revenant means ghost (for the most part), so it all kinda makes sense. What or who he is I don't know and can't even begin to speculate who he is. At first I thought it might be a Raver that dug up his body, but Linden would feel that coming, I would think, and would be too easy/obvious.

I'm more excited about the fact that Jeremiah is back. That's what Linden wanted above all else; her son. Well, now she has him back, so now what? 'Tis definitely going to be interesting.

TC told Linden not to trust him? I must have missed that...

That being said, I don't think it's the real TC either, but I have no idea who it could be. On the other hand, this is the final chronicles of Thomas Covenant, so I'm guessing he'll turn up at some point ;)

I think it is the real Covenant, based on SRD's description of him.

My money is on it NOT being Covenant, but some sort of "ill wight" that resembles him, sent there in order to get the white gold off Linden. Remember, she has to freely give the white gold for it to work properly.

TC tells Linden not to trust him right before she goes back in time to get the Staff. I think what he means is not to trust him in the 'past'. Now I don't really know 'why' he tells her this after telling her to go get the staff in the first place? Unless his 'past' self is somehow not the same person his 'present' self is?
I do believe that it really is TC riding up at the end of ROTE, and hope that the next book will go into the 'how' it happened. For all we know TC and Jerimiah have been hanging out together for the last 3500 years just waiting for Jerimiahs body to show up?

TC tells Linden not to trust him because he's dead. Meaning, he's susceptible to being summoned or controlled, especially by Lord Foul.

So it could in fact be Covenant, but he may be enthralled. It might be obvious, or, more likely, it may be a hidden nasty surprise.

Then again, we have to consider that the person who said "Find me" and "Don't trust me; I'm dead" may not have been Covenant. (See Grass topic herein.)

Then again, there's the theory that if the Arch of Time is being fragmented, perhaps Covenant has been "split up" somehow. It may only be some of Covenant.

Or it can be a Covenant from another time, come through a Ceisure.

I'm not persuing any theory here; just pointing out that there's so many possibilities, more and more every time that you look ...

When he spoke to her through Anele, Covenant was warning her... don't trust the revenant, find me (set me free)... I think he is trapped somewhere, being controlled by Foul or another player. The Covenant approaching Revelstone is an echo, or a puppet. But the real Covenant is out there somewhere. SRD did say that TC had some realisations to come to yet, some discoveries to make. I think our clue to his identity will be whether or not SRD writes from his point of view.

Jeremiah's appearance is more exciting for me, though - especially since he is very obviously interacting with his environment. In effect, this will be the first time he and Linden really meet. There is so much of him that she doesn't know, so much that has been trapped beneath a surface of horror... I hope SRD explores that to some extent.

Whoaaa!

...Yes,hes dead,,but not really dead..He is the Arch of Time..remember, stopping Lord Prissy Pants from exiting the realm of the Land?...So, to me the question is ,,how is it TC got down from the Arch and got on the horse back..oh oh..a paradox of time travel coming up on that...TC is still the arch of time, containing your highness of halitosis,,while a TC, brought forth from a past by the Demondim ,is galavanting around on horseback...
...and Lucky Linden is going to have to deal with the paradox......I mean, its possible ,,one TC will be speaking to her thru Anele,,while she is looking at another standing before her...and both of them will be saying watch out for the other......oye!........MEL

Wow! I didn't expect such a flood of replies to my first post! I guess I like the theory of it being another covenant from the past... Also, remember the other warnings to beware of the halfhand? Which halfhand do you think is the problem? Let's see, there's Covenant, Jeremiah, and at least 3 haruchai....

Be welcome Vickie, and be true!

I don't believe that it *can* be Covenant from the past - the books from before have tracked Covenant pretty closely during his time in the Land, and any knowledge of future would have radically altered his behavior in his "when". There weren't enough gaps to allow him to disappear like that...

Given the information, I can't say with any sesne of validity who it was I will say this however, it was defintely an incredible cliff-hanger kicking Mr. Donaldson's long awaited return to The Land:)

If Jeremiah actually has the power, now, to reason he'll prob have worse "head problems" than Anele: Foul, Covenant, The Evangelist, Kast, Roger and even Nom may try to speak through him! 8O :P (Wow! Covenant talking to Roger through Jeremiah! Way too weird!!!)

To me it's fishy, since Lord Foul had Jeremiah. "Tell her I have her son." I mean, he must've set him free on purpose; I wouldn't expect the kid to escape on his own.

Mhoram (or someone) said the answers of the dead rebound on the living.

If Covenant's true voice comes from the earth, which his wild magic is graven in, might it be that the voices of the earth are all, in truth, also the voice of the dead? After all, where do the dead go but to the earth.

He also said something to the effect of, if you ever find your son, that'll mean that I'm about to do him in.

Lord Foul might have lied. Remember that his snares are ever beset with other snares.

I find it ominous, though, that we know nigh nothing about Roger in the Land. Who knows, he might have cut his own two fingers off in his madness to resemble his father, and he is the halfhand the Elohim had prophecied about...

And and even more intriguing question: will Liand be Linden's lover?

I have a dark thought that I don't feel comfortable sharing about Liand or the true or false Covenant reguarding Linden.Could a raver possesed Liand or twisted version of Covenant try to rape her?I know this is disturbing, but Foul seems to enjoy cruel irony. And it seems like a concievable SRD plot twist. Please don't chastise me too much for this suggestion,it popped into my mind at the end of Runes and has bothered me since.

Ah, Lay your fears to rest Firelion..don't forget Linden can sence a Raver from a mile Away..and if she can't, the Haruchai can!
