Pat Murphy, author of the book Nadya and science writer for San Francisco's Exploratorium, has a few pieces of short fiction on-line; IMO, they are worth taking note. One is archived at scifi.com in 2004 Inappropriate behavior, plot could be said to based very loosely on Rachel in love, Speed of dark by Elizabeth Moon. www.scifi.com/scifiction/originals/orig ... rphy1.html
Second is Rachel in love, winner of Nebula in 1987. www.brazenhussies.net/murphy/Rachel.html Most will probably take it as an overly sentimentalistic piece of writing; however, there is an edge. Also, this novella is anthologized in Women of Wonder edited by Pamela Sargeant and A women's liberation edited by Connie Willis and Sheila Williams
