Should I give in?

Dang it, just looking at the covers of these Potter books is addicting! That Rowling lady really struck gold! Arggh if I give in, no one is safe!!!

Give in and try the first book... It's not like anyone will hold a gun to your head over the rest of them if you don't like
Philosopher's Stone. Then you can be the lifeline for those of us who tried so hard to resist.
I'm a convert myself. The commercialism of it drove me nuts the first few years, and I refused to have anything to do with it on principle. Watching the first movie over and over again finally got to me, though; it was on HBO something like once a day, and usually the only watchable thing on the 40 channels at my disposal. I thought that if the movie was that entertaining, the books might be, too. Now I'm a die-hard fan. How the mighty have fallen.

Aww David, come on and join us Pottermaniacs. It's actually a well thought out story. As you get into the other books, you'll find that there is nothing "kiddie" about them. It's a wonderful, magical, fantastic world that Rowling has woven.
Come on, don't be an ignorant muggle all your life!!!

A muggle?! Well, I never!
But, eh, after I finish reading the Iliad and the Oddyssey (and then the Aeneid), I guess I'll take a look at these darned Potter books. I'll just wear a mask or something when I buy them; and I hope my English professor won't see me!

Hey, the game's already up. If your English prof sees you reading the Iliad, Odyssey, and Aeneid, he'll put a curse on you for reading that dam' foreign crap!
I mean, what horrors will you descend to next? Before you know it, it will be Aristophanes, and you won't be able to say anything but Brek-ek-ek-ex, ko-ax, ko-ax!

Well, correction, then: I won't be looking into Potter until I finish the Iliad, Odyssey, Aeneid,
and the complete plays of Aristophanes.

Well, my craving for Potter faded. It's going to take forever to finish reading my current books, since I barely read these days and invest all my time in gluttonous video games and other such excesses. Sorry, Harry!

I might be in trouble, I seem to be starting to crack. I adamantly swore that I would never Buff or Pott, but birdandbear's friend Autumn has almost got me hooked on Buffy. If I totally cave there then HP can't be far behind

St. Germain series by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro. Very different from Rice, but I enjoyed them very much.

i was able to read the books because i had seen the first two movies and liked them...then i read azkaban and goblet..then went back and started the books from the beginning...if i had tried to read them before i saw the movies I most likely would have dismissed them as being too childish to read...
Turns out that they really are good

Excellent books. I really enjoy them. What am I talking about? I have two sites dedicated to the boy wizard, I'm obsessed! (I only have one for Donaldson, though I like his books better in a lot of ways.)

I read the first four books a couple of weeks ago, and here's a post i made at SFFWorld about what I thought (some of you are going to disagree with me
):
I've seen the three films, and recently read the first four books. The first book was lifeless and dull, and since I'd seen the film first (the film being virtually scene-for-scene identical to the book) a completely pointless read for me.
The second was a slight improvement, but nothing impressive.
The third was better, but I hold the opinion that the changes made for the film turned an alright plot into a fairly good one (some of the way the book was done just didn't work so well, and the film writer seemed to have polished it off into a better whole).
The fourth book I enjoyed, but there seemed to be a lot of stuff that could've been cut without affecting the plot.
I think that while Rowling's prose is improving with each book, she's also putting more 'filler' content into the plot.
Nothing particularly impressive as a book, but entertaining story which may or may not work better in the film format. I think it's the story that made the books popular anyway, because there's no way anyone'd read The Philosopher's Stone for literary merit (though as I said, this improved later).
