Alan Dean Foster: Fan of music, fantasy, and illicit drugs.

Have any of you ever read Alan Dean Foster's classic Spellsinger series? It's actually quite a read in my opinion; pre-law student Jonathan Merriweather is kidnapped by Clothahump, a turtle wizard, so that he can help save their world from the Plated Folk, giant insects with Nazi-esque attitudes towards the other people of the world.

The first two books, in my opinion, were epic, and at time laugh-out-loud funny. The third was... well, to put it bluntly, FREAKING OUT THERE, MAN. I'm not going to spoil everything to you, but Jonathan Meriweather (who goes by Jon-Tom) helps to calm the psychological problems of a forest full of fungi, battles a pirate ship led by a demented parrot, and eventually outwits a giant kangaroo-god.

Of course, I falter at giving these books the description they deserve; all I can say to you is seek these books out, people! Read them and cherish them, for they are certainly worth your time... especially if you're looking for a fantasy series which isn't afraid to mess with your head like a bad LSD trip.

I've read many a Foster novel (his best was not even speculative fiction, IMHO, called Primal Shadows), but these Spellsinger books slipped past me. I'll have to check them out. Thanks.

I'll keep an eye out. I'm always keen on anything that reminds me of LSD. ;)

I've read the first one, and I loved it! I found it in my MOTHER'S bookcase, of all things! ;)

Just avoid Son of Spellsinger at all cost.

I've been a huge fan of Foster for years and still pick up his books and re-read them over and over again. He has a large fan base to be sure but it's not so overwhelmingly huge that he's given credit where it's due.
I like a lot of his Commonwealth books and the characters within and without. The Flinx series I haven't gotten too heavily in but they're good to go along with.
I've always enjoyed his work and thus will be called fan til I die.

Nuff said...for now
