Kevin's Watch

Greetings all, I am freshly returned (about 9 hours ago) from the International Conference for the Fantastic in the Arts in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and am ready to tender my report.

Fact stuff first:
* YES, for certain, SRD is writing the 3rd Chronicles
* No street date for the 3rd Chronicles yet.
* There will probably be FOUR (not three) books in the series.
* Linden is the main character, in the Land because Lord Foul has her son.

SRD read from the first book, but he read from page 710, and said the book was "a little over halfway done". The scene he read was about Linden having come back from running, and melding, with the Ranyhyn, which almost killed her. It was stark, epic, and basically wonderful.

He talked about having had trouble deciding what to read, because the book heavily utilized something called "stirring cycles", which are basically time-shifted narrative segments as far as I could tell.

I took notes during the reading, mostly because I recognized that I was hearing pronunciations. I'll give them AP-style below:

Ranyhyn: RAH-nee-hin
Manethrall: MAYN-thrall
Aliantha: ah-lee-AHHN-thah
Haruchai: hah-ROO-chiy (like Chai tea)
Amanibhavam: ah-mah-nee-bih-VAHN

Afterwards, I asked him about the Del Ray info that had been posted here. He told me that the people at Del Ray have treated him VERY badly for the last 10 years of so, and that, even though they were now making noises about being interested in publishing his new books, odds were good that he would be taking them elsewhere.

On a more personal note, this was a great conference. I spent the bulk of my time hanging out with Ross and Perry Donaldson (both of whom I now consider friends). We swam, ate, watched movies, discovered a common fondness for Eddie Izzard and Lilo & Stitch, and basically just had a great time. When they were checking out, SRD thanked me for being so kind to his children, and I told him, with all honesty, that it was I who should be thanking them. They're great, hands-down, just great.

Oh, and because Ross invited me to sit down with him at breakfast one morning, I got to meet and get to know horror author Peter Straub, who ends up being one of the most genuinely nice (and funny) people I've met in a while.

Overall, it was great. I'm headed out tomorrow (after a day of rest and recouperation) to get my film developed, and when I do, I'll scan the pictures and put them up online somewhere and paste the links here.

Yes, yes I did. I printed out all the questions people here asked, and handed them to him, with the address for the board at the top. I told him that, if he could log on and answer them, that would be great, but that even if he could just pop and say "Hi, I know you exist now", that would be good too.

Oh, and Perry said she'd be logging on too, his daughter.

He did answer one of the questions for me in person... he said that, in answer to the question about which of the races from the Land he'd like to write about outside the series (and this is as close to a quote as memory permits): "Well, since I never write about any of them outside the context of those stories... this one's easy." At this point, he mouthed "NO" and pantomimed writing that on the page.

So yes, I made him aware of us, and he may log on, or at least read stuff.

Perry's 17, and I have no clue if she's single or not. She did have an entourage of two young gentlemen with her at ICFA, Phil and James, who were very nice as well, so... I'm thinking probably not.

I have scanned my pics, however. Go to www.profj.org/srd/ if you'd like to see them. I apologize for the discoloration of the first photo, my camera got opened during transport, so the film got slightly exposed. Ah well, you can still see it's him, and that's the important part.

Did you get any details about the role Thomas is playing. Are Joan and Roger in anyway involved with the plot. Also, is the son of which you speak the child who put his hand in the fire.

All smashingly good questions, and none that I have any information about, unfortunately.

No mention of TC at all. Linden was with the Ramen and a single Haruchai in the section SRD read on Saturday... I think his name was Thale, but don't quote me on that. The son is definitely the autistic child she adopted in the beginning of the book (from last year's reading) but I don't know if he's the child from the fire or not.

No mention of Joan or Roger either, since all the "action" this time around was in The Land proper.

And to paraphrase the hooded sweatshirt (which I will be ordering as soon as I save up the mula), as far as dishing out info, I'm happy to do it and fortunately... I suffice.

sounds interesting doesn't it? I wonder if SRD uses an autistic character to explore the fact that autism can result in the sufferer not understanding the difference between right and wrong - heck of a concept in the hands of LF don't you think?

Surely TC will be in there though, even if he's a spectre, I'd hate to see him gone.

Thinking this through, how soon do we think the first book could be out - of he's halfway through writing - reckon on maybe 6 mths to a year to finish, then to get it edited, approved and published - maybe a year to 18 mths til it's out at best?

Can we wait???

The only downside about the whole thing is that we'll have to wait for each instalment to be written and published. ( ) Think we can take the anticipation???
