You know, there really are a whole lot of lost civilizations lying around. I was once told the joke in many archeology departments is that to find a lost city is really simple--just go to some out-of-way spot and ask the locals where the nearest one happens to be!
My fave story about that involved a team that was searching for the city of Upar in the Arabian Desert. At an oasis in the general area where they believed Upar must have stood, they asked some Bedouins one night if they'd noticed any ruins.
Their reply: "Well, there's the wall we're sitting on right now."
Yep. That was the wall of the lost city of Upar!
