Just a random thought really...I've heard that people always prefer the Doctor they grew up with. I guess I do as I liked Pertwee (which badly shows me up as an old git, but there you go ).

So...prove me right or prove me wrong!

grew up with baker, my dad and i would watch him. dad really liked the barbarian girl for some reason.

Same here (Tom Baker), though Sylvester McCoy is a close second. (Mainly because Ace was my favorite Companion.)

Pertwee. Great character of the Doctor, and I met him one night. Baker would be my second favourite (though only for the first four seasons). Eccleston is my third favourite.

I'm very fond of Davison, but ultimately I voted Eccleston as my favorite. Great, now I'm going to feel guilty all night for betraying Davison...

grew up on Tom Baker on PBS.
Sarah kept me company late at night.....heh.

I've been on the planning committees, and attended cons where Pertwee, Davidson, and Colin Baker have each been guests. So I've been in panel discussions and in the con room after hours with said guests. Of the three, I found Pertwee to be the most fan-friendly.

That said, I also grew up with Tom Baker on PBS, and as I have not seen the newest incarnation of the series yet, Tom Baker remains my favorite Doctor on the show itself.

Tom Baker - yes, the 1st Doctor I remember also. Cried when he fell off that metal structure and turned into Peter Davison. (I was seven). Davison turned out pretty good too though.

For me it's:
1. Tom Baker
2. Chris Ecclestone
3. a tie between Jon Pertwee & Peter Davison.

Christopher Eccleston since he is the nly one I really know.

I need to check to see if Blockbuster has the series on dvd. when I was young, the Boston PBS ran Pertwee, Baker and the guy after. some blonde. after that I have not seen any.

I have to say Christopher Eccleston out of the fact that he's the only Doctor I remember (I was VERY young when I saw the older episode)

Not out to prove you wrong - I agree with you.

Tom Baker was the one who brought the Series to the Main stream, here in the U.S. - You simply cannot forgo that fact. But, for me, the origin of the Doctor was intensely relevant for understanding everything that followed. And, watching Jon Pertwee build the Tardus; understanding how he was probably more involved in the summation(sp) of the character than anyone else, really... it sorta sticks with you. Tom Baker was fun - but Pertwee made ya think more about the whole idea or concept. I mean, really - walk into a Tardus and find you have room for your pool table and a 80-inch TV screen? The original Doctor was pretty good, too. They just didnt give him the suport on the storylines, as well as later on. I guess it comes with the growth of the Show.

I would hope by now, the whole Series is available on DVD.

As I understand it, Doctor Who was originally devised as an educational series for teaching children about history in an interesting way. So no, the storylines wouldn't be as engaging.

If they can ever be said to be engaging at all

Not sure if I remember it like that, or not.

As I saw it, Dr. Who expected (right away) for the audience to remember, or focus, as it were, on the basics (101) of physics, since without that belief, ideas like the Tardus would have NEVER gained any belief system whatsoever - and without that platform - Dr. Who goes nowhere!

So, yeah - Dr. Who had a whole slew of premises upon which to recreate or resurrect himself. If you dn't believe that a complete hotel room could fit inside of a Tardus -- where does the Series go?

Apparently, and if we can discount hype, David Tennant is said to be a great doctor - and many are suggesting that may be the best. However, the same thing happened during McCoy's last season. I'll hold back my judgement. To be honest, Tennant's comment about 'being down the kids' has me very concerned; Eccleston's excesses, as well as Tom Baker's, were annoying and silly. Let us hope Tennant tones down.

You don't know about the newly revived and rejuvenated Dr. Who series? Christopher Eccleston was great as the new Doctor but he was around only for the premier season. He's now been replaced by David Tennant.

I hail from the midwest - in Indiana - and back in the day - we used to be able to watch Dr. Who on PBS in these parts - but, nowadays, they only show the stuff which is mainstream - not very much of the so-called fringe stuff these days - it's all programmed, if ya know what I mean.....

But, I bet I can find it on DVD somewheres....

I was reading the historical name list and Peter Davison was the last one I watched with any regularity. Got a lot of catching up to do....

The series goes downhill from Davison. Though McCoy has two good stories; the rest are bad or average.

Jon Pertwee is still my favourite Actor in this Series; everyone usually likes Tom Baker and he was pretty good, but Pertwee was "the guy" who built the TARDUS and got the ball rolling on several levels. I liked that yellow jalopy he drove everywhere, too!
