Kevin's Watch

Not really a deep meaningful subject here, but has anyone ever found it amusing that SRD named the most powerful Lord after Berek - Kevin?

Most of the other characters (except maybe Lord Trevor) have the kind of names you would expect in this kind of story, but did SRD have a reason for using such a run of the mill name?

I thought it was kind of weird and out-of-place at first. But then I got used to it and I now think of Kevin as a grand, majestic name.

Although it does always make me think of Kevin as a young man. Old people just aren't called Kevin.

The questions came up a few times in the GI, and SRD just said it was a name that stuck with him at the time of writing (paraphasing...)

this is probably right outa left field so to speak but (and this is just lucimay logic, not necessarily human logic )
i have always assumed (call me crazy) that since it was such a different kind of name than all the others, Kevin MAY have been from Covenant's world. I don't know, call me wacky, but i've always been just WAITING for Donaldson to spring some kind of knowledge like that on Covenant, Avery, or the reader.

i know, go figure.

SRD said that he never thought Kevin was the least bit odd or unfitting for the Land, and if he knew people were going to view it the way so many of us do, he would have given him another name.

To be perfectly honest, I never thought Kevin was an odd name for a person of the Land, either.
It seemed to fit, and it was never a hurdle for me. Maybe picture it as "Khevin" while you read, and it'll fit better?

Well since Kevin was one of the first names u wer told about in full detail in the book i never gave it much thought, also i would figure that since it was a while back that names change with the times. But obv i hadnt read all the books yet, im kinda proved wrong with that bit.

my brother's name is Kevin. and i really can't picture him running more than a beer keg.

"I am Kevin. Lord of the land, fill up dudes!"

lol I think this discussion is getting a little silly now but what can I say, I started it!
I think a lot of my views about this come from the fact that I am English and Kevin is your kind of spotty teenager (a la Harry Enfield) name or a boy racer from Essex. Sorry to all you other Kevins out there!
Oh and to add mine, how about: BASIL Landwaster! hee hee

Seriously, though, I never really had a problem with Kevin's name.

Thanks for looking that up! I have no doubt that Kevin was a kind and handsome man, and charismatic as well -- a natural leader, as they say. Too bad his good looks and charm didn't help him much in the end.

Yes, that sums it up for me, too.

When I read the first chronicles - egads, so long ago - I wondered if Kevin would end up being from our world. It really stood out against other names like Foamfollower, Foul, Mhoram, etc.

That could have made for some interesting storylines! Alas.
