The important thing about getting a laptop is to make sure you get accessories that make it easy to work with. (Extra screen, separate keyboard etc.)

I have an IBM thinkpad at work, and that is working okay except for a nasty tendency to lose connection with the battery. bip bip bip*

But if I did not need to have a laptop I would have stuck with the tabletop.

I dont have a home PC. I have a laptop. I have a Compaq Presario 1230. It fits my needs well.

I like my Dell...I know, I know, people with high levels of computer expertise (more commonly referred to as Computer Geeks....jk

)will curse me forever for uttering those words....but I love it. Yeah, it wasn't working for a while there, but that was my own fault....not many laptops take too well to being dropped....

Though I don't count myself among the elite, I do spend a good amount of time with computers. I don't think there is anything at all wrong with liking your Dell, especially a laptop. Laptops and desktops are animals from the same species but have a fundamentally different family tree. Computer Geeks might argue that assembling a desktop yourself, with all hand picked parts and personal configurations is the only way to go. Letting Dell or Gateway restrict your participation in your computer's health and well being is sacrilege. Since laptops generally aren’t much fun to tinker with, they get a pass from most computer techies. Don't be ashamed. Enjoy your Dell.

Funnily enough it was a Thinkpad which made me vow never again to get another laptop. I had so many things go wrong with it, and each one cost me a fortune to fix (IBM charge you £70 to speak to tech support, which I refused to pay). The main one was the power system, which started out as the problem you mention above and eventually stopped working altogether. It cost me £250 to put right, only for the HD to destroy itself a few months later (for the second time, I might add).

Laptops might look cool and be reasonably portable, but they are very expensive, can't really be upgraded and cost an absolute fortune to fix. My advice would be to get a new desktop system and buy a nice PDA (something from PalmOne would be my choice, as I've got nothing but praise for them) with the money you'll save. You'll have something more portable (not to mention robust) as well as the ease of repair/upgrade of a desktop system.
