Kevin's Watch

Since this issue came up in the "Ban Linden Avery" topic, I figured we should start a new topic, in case anyone felt like discussing it furthur. Feel free to post your comments. I'm open to suggestions. I like the Watch to be a board run by the members, and not some kind of dictatorship, heh.-jay

(Although there will still be violence inherent in the system. And you'll still be repressed. Heh. )

I vote for no filter. Anyone who's read SRD has been exposed to foul language and adult themes. With very few exceptions, we here on the Watch do a pretty good job of editing ourselves, and even without the filter I doubt we'll see much use of the word. The couple of times I've felt compelled to use it, I've simply replaced the "U" with an "*".

Well, I think everyone who has been following things should know my opinion. I think I might explain the pun that originally made me notice the presence of censorship.

I tried to make the case that the Clave creation story is not in fact pure fiction but rather a Lord Foul style misleading truth. Along the lines of the best metaphorical Biblical tradition of talking of places as if they were women (Jeremiah for example has a bunch of that stuff complete with adultery), the world = Diassomer Mininderain. The Creator got mad because Lord Foul had been f*cking with something belonging to the Creator.

I hope that wasn't too painful...

I think it's up to people to self-censor myself. Gratuitous use of the "F" word is probably not a good thing

unfortunately, i HAVE to censor myself (thanks to my dad's potty mouth) as i use the eff word too often in conversation...so the Watch has been good for me in this respect...altho i now tend to use freakin' or friggin too much now...

no censorship. very few would take advantage and the ones that do would either grow up or be dealt with

No filter. As Cail mentioned, it is used in TC, and I'm sure we can all restrain ourselves.

I'm not sure we ALL could restrain ourselves,removing the word censor could be the first step down the proverbial "slippery slope".It would be a shame for Kevins Watch to become as uncivil and profane as so many other boards I have stumbled across.

I agree about self-censorship *but* there's always problems with that. What one person thinks is acceptable use of profanities is not necessarily acceptable to another person. I'd prefer the f**k, s**t type of censorship (if I were to have a choice) rather than complete censorship (eg ****). Must admit though, when I first came to Kevin's Watch it was refreshing to be on a board where posts aren't laced with profanities.

My preference is to keep the family friendly flavor of the Watch. Howver, I think the Mods, Admins, and Watch family's self restraint is preferrable to software controls.

That poll was at 9-1-0 at one point. It was revealing to see how it moved while Europe slept. (It's now 11-3-3.)

Just to repeat a point, but it would be really silly if we, who have each presumably read and enjoyed SRD, ended up censoring SRD writing, particularly the Sheriff Lytton parts, but it's not like the other characters never use the kind of language that would be disapproved by some people. For example, Linden in Runes takes Lord's name in vain pretty often.

for the longest i didn't even know that fuck was censored. i agree with keeping it as such, no harm done. long as we keep damn and hell.

I dunno about having no censorship at all. There are more Australian members here now.

As an Australian, I think its quite amusing that we block f*ck, but the c word (according to the poll) is not blocked. Here in Melbourne thats really the only taboo word left, although my wife (an American) always hits me if I say n*gger.

I think we should block the f and c words, and let everything else through. I think that by blocking those words it will create good habits amongst those of us who use those words a little too frequently - my mother used to say "people who use those words too often are showing their ignorance by not being able to find a more appropriate word for their emotions"

Yes, I was disappointed when I read Linden swearing in Runes.

If we really must swear, seeing it as f*ck is fine by me.

Ah yes, the c-word. One of last unsayable words, at least in polite company.

I must say that I don't see the need for any censorship. No one has ever used the c-word here at the Watch that I can remember and instances of both the s-word and the f-word are few and far between.
