Best Classic Scores?

There are many beautiful tunes that have been created for the world of cinema, so what classical score or tune sticks you the most in films... what has got you the most excited? What tune touches your heart with it's beauty? What makes you weep with its sadness?

These are some I have loved.

Star Wars: Battle of Fates (The Phantom Menace), and Vader vs. Obi-Wan (Revenge of the Sith) - Got to be some of the most exciting pieces of music ever created in cinema history; completely amazing with the moments it plays at. (The battles)

Lord Of The Rings: The Shire (Fellowship of the Ring) and March of the Ents (The Two Towers) The first piece is beautiful... peaceful, and it's simplicity in it's creation only adds to it's artistry... and the March of the Ents... wow, I loved the vocals, the way dozens of gaint powerful creatures watch on Isengard. Amazing moment.

Titanic: Sad, yes... but I found I loved some of this music greatly. The tunes in it are largely sad and heart wrenching. The music when Titanic firsts gets going and Jack(?) screams at the front of the ship was great as well.

The Matrix Revolutions: Neo versus Smith. Wow... just... wow 8) Amazing piece. What action, what music for that moment. The vocals were a marvelment. Just has you sitting on the edge of your sit. It's great.

Overall, I think I'd say that classical music in the cinema was what first made me really appreciate classical music outside. With classical music, it's so music easier to discern and inform what mood you are being portrayed, or portraying.

So what are yours?

Hmmm.....does this belong in Flicks, or Vespers? I suppose I could move it back & forth, as the whim hits. Best soundtracks ever: Roadie, Spinal Tap, Heavy Metal.

Nice choices, Darth. Brave of you to mention Titanic, the movie everyone loves to hate. (I liked it.)

SW: Empire Strikes Back - the Imperial March (Vader's theme). This theme runs throughout the movie in various guises, underlining Vader's dominant role and his relentless pursuit of the Rebels. Listening to the soundtrack, I noticed that many of the music cues end with an appearance by Vader's theme, as if to emphasize his inescapable presence.

SW: A New Hope -- the "Force" theme (or Ben Kenobi's theme), especially as used in the Throne Room victory sequence at the end. A noble piece of music in perfect sync with a noble, celebratory occasion. Filmgoers may have already been blown away by all that had gone before in the movie, but this final scene no doubt sent people out of the theatre on a tremendous emotional high...to walk right back in to see the film one more time. Ah, those were the days...

ST: The Motion Picture -- the opening battle music as the Klingon cruisers confront V'ger. Ilia's beautiful, wistful theme. The glorious "Enterprise" music that accompanies Kirk and Scotty to the refurbished starship in spacedock. The "leaving drydock" music as the Enterprise departs on its mission. The evocative music representing the mystery of V'ger, as the Enterprise journeys through its immense structures. Really, this movie has so much great music in it, that it's a shame all people do is complain about how boring the movie is. All right, just listen to the soundtrack then. ;)

The theme is really great. And the best hearing of it is when she gives him the thistle after the funeral. Man, that's powerful!

Agreed.

I'd have to say that my favorite soundtrack of all time is Rocky. IMHO, this is Bill Conti's masterpiece.

Ah, yes! Rocky is great! Love the music as the rounds are whipping past. Also the slow music earlier in the film, when he's thinking and scared. Excellent mood setter!

I can't remember that one.

Troy's music was also particulary enjoyable for me.

The theme from Cinema Paradiso (Morricone).
The theme (and variations on it) of Sophie's Choice (Hamlisch).

Both always move me, for different reasons of course.
