Actor to play Thomas Covenant

Having just joined the forum today this might have been stated before. I've long thought Keifer Sutherland would be good for the role. The haggard persecuted role of Jack Bauer in 24 seems a logical progression.

And when things go wrong he could scream "WE'RE RUNNING OUT OF TIME!!" at Mhoram :)

Keifer has played a lot of different roles between 24 and the various movies he's done. He could probably pull it off, but I'm not sure the look is right. I imagined TC as being taller and thinner.

Actually David Bowie strikes me more as TC than Kieffer...

Sutherland better than most, and about the right age. I think he could pull it off.

no no no . . . Josh Holloway "Sawyer" from abc's LOST!!!!!
He can pull it off a hell of alot better than keifer ever could.

Holloway is WAY too handsome for TC, he would never fit the part that way. Although I know he would probably pull in some younger audiences. I mean he looks like kid rock for crying out loud ! LOL

i think Guy Pierce could nail the role of Covenant. best actor i can think of both as a physical match and ability to capture the character.

To select an actor to play TC based on the argument regarding age or looks is rather shallow to be honest. The most important aspect for this role is depth. If an actor cannot pull of the inner turmoil (confusion, self-hate, self-pity, etc.) while still engendering the needed sympathy... it really doesn't matter who they select-- it might as well be Keannu Reeves. I could care less if they "look the part" or match up to the age... what I desire is someone who is the Unbeliever. If the film makers fail in this it matters little how good everything else is for TC's inner turmoil is the crux of the whole story... will he believe again.... will he love again... etc. Nothing else matters. So with this in mind I would select:

Daniel Day-Lewis

On a side note, I think Jeremy Irons would be great as Mhoram.

I agree in spirit with what you're saying...that whomever is chosen needs to be able to act the part, more than anything else.... but at the same time I don't want to be distracted by a complete disconnect between the actor's physicality and what TC has been described as.

Actually, I would much rather see a non-star take the role:
a) less chance of the movie being gutted to become a star-vehicle.
b) less star-wattage means a greater % of budget can go to script and FX.
c) I don't want preconceived opinions of the actor (mine, critics, or otherwise) getting in the way of the Covenant story.

After lots of thought...I think Hugh Laurie looks great for the part of TC...but a younger Harrison Ford is still my all-time pick, and unfortunately for me I'll never anyone but Liam Neeson as Mhoram...
I see Jeremy Irons as Lord Foul...he has the darkness, and a great ageless voice.

David Bowie is a great choice, danlo. Only he's way too old by now.

I've said this name before and I will say it again.

Ben Browder of Farscape could carry if off and do so with style.
