Can anyone offer advice to someone wanting to investigate this form of file sharing?Could you recommend a good client?Or ways of finding torrents?

First, download this and optimize your system.

Second, test your speed

Third, plug your results into this. Keep this page up for a bit

Fourth, download uTorrent (tho BitLord seems a bit more popular and has many of the same options).

When you set up uTorrent, when it asks you for all the connection stuff, use the results you got back from the 4th test.

Now you're ready to go. If you're looking for stuff to download, try www.mininova.org and www.isohunt.com (there's also a search window in utorrent where you can select sites).

After you find something you want, download the torrent file and open it. This should start utorrent automatically, but if it doesn't and it asks you what you want to open it with, select utorrent.

That's it. You might want to change the options in utorrent to select a certain file where your downloads go, and if you can't find them, check those options to find out where they're going (I can't remember the default location off the top of my head).

After you've downloaded the file, try to keep seeding it until you're ratio is 1.0 or higher (meaning you've given as much info as you took). Oh, and seeds mean people sharing the whole file, leechers are people downloading (and due to the nature of bittorrent, sharing as well). Once that's done, you can delete it from the que in uTorrent.

Happy downloading... oh, and download responsibly.

***First three steps are not absolutely necessary, but trust me.

Holy f'ing smoke! This thing ROCKS! I downloaded the entire 3-hour concert of Led Zeppelin at Knebworth in '79. Syl, you just earned yourself a free drink at the get-together in June.

What is the minimum capabilities of a system needed to do this? Will my old dinosaur running Windows 98 and a dial up connection be functional?

Esmer...*shakes finger*

Don't feel bad Menolly, I might run XP, but at least you've got a connection, even if it is a dial-up. More than I have at home. *sigh* ;)

What is the advantage (or disadvantage) of using something like this vs. something such as LimeWire or Soul Seek?

For large files, it's typically faster, mainly because it will download different pieces as they're available, rather than sequentially (if whoever you're downloading from logs off and you're only at 30%, you don't have to wait for that next 31% to start downloading again). It was designed to distribute large amounts of data without an equal increase in bandwidth usage.

I just blindly followed your wonderful directions.
Had I stopped to think I would have messed something up.

Thank you sir!
I've tried the Torrent thing before but must have used lousy programs.
This was easy.

Thanks again!

No prob. Just remember it was confusing as hell when I first started getting into it, so wanted to help people avoid some of the mistakes I made.

bittorrent is fantastic. I've been doing it for about 6 months now and I've saved an incredible ammount of money. I just downloaded the entire 2nd season of rescue Me-took about 2 days!

I can't wait to start watching it.
