Ur-Viles?

Hi, I'm new here :)

Though I've only just started reading the series (not more than a few pages in actually), I have a very close friend who has been looking for a good picture of a ur-vile for quite a long time. I've looked around as well, but I can't seem to find even a decent one. So my question is, does anybody know of one? Many thanks!

I've never seen one and a quick google search didnt come up with anything good either.

The only thing i can think of is the Gilden Fire cover.

Hmm, I hadn't seen that cover before, it might work actually!

Thank you very much for saying that!

I think they've got the ur-Viles in that pic the wrong way round - it's big nostrils, small mouth.

I have never like the gilden-Fire art work, I just never though the haruchai were presented well.

Yep. :D I coulda sworn there were some artists conceptions posted here and there somewhere, but I'm damned if I know where.

Never seen the illustrated GildenFire, so have no opinion on the art I'm afraid.

Oh, and ES, watch out huh? The forums are full of spoilers for you.

Hope you're enjoying the book, and look forward to your comments. :D

Ur-Viles have been generally described as black, roynish with wide slavering nostrils, no eyes and a basic hatred of everyone...oh and hairless as well.....they also carry iron staves.....and speaking in a barking type manner...

*bump*

Which brings me to my question... what the hell does "roynish" mean. I've never seen the word anywhere else, or been able to find it in the dictionary. The closest I've been able to find is "roy" as a word stem for "regal"...

I tend to picture them as black beings with no distinct head (ie. no neck or shoulders), rather short, with large noses, slit-ish mouths, pointed heads, in rag like ropes, with short, animal like arms and legs. Almost like black, strong, bad-ass armadillos who have stood upright and grown opposable thumbs.

Dictionary.com:
Roynish

\Royn"ish\, a. [F. rogneux, from rogne scab, mange, itch.] Mangy; scabby; hence, mean; paltry; troublesome. [Written also roinish.] [Obs.] ``The roynish clown.'' --Shak.

As it's been bumped...

I've since gotten the illustrated Gildenfire and I agree with iQuestor...don't like the portrayal of the Haruchai in the artwork.

The artwork for the noble Ranyhyn is a bit dodgy too.

Hmm, the UrViles are kind of wobbly....

Similarly to the book covers, I don't think the artist read the book. Or even the relevant passages.

Don't get me wrong, the art would be good elsewhere, but I love these stories too much for me to be happy with these interpretations.

If I had a scanner I might try a bit myself and post it.
Any recommendations?

I also pictured their heads kind of cone shaped- the Gildenfire cover is totally off. Didn't they run it by SDR first?

Well while we're at it ... what's with the short swords? I thought urviles wielded staves.

Wikipedia
Staves associated with wizards or magi are generally made of wood and are the height of the wizard. Magic staves were used as a tool to focus the energy of the wizard

Their staves were iron and short IIRC.
