Alladin's the only one I saw.

I was sitting here thinking to myself, "No A Clockwork Orange?" as I made my way through the list. I should have known it was nearly number 1.

Terrific film though, based on a wonderful, if difficult to read, novel.

I find it hard to believe that none of you have seen The Passion of the Christ - was it really that controversial in the US?

Wait, what a silly question. Of course it was. Do normal US citizens get tired of all the controversy?

I saw maybe 6 - 9 of those movies. And Do the Right Thing is controversial? But I like most of Spike's movies. You saw Kids on TV, most of Larry Clark's work is very raw and in your face, more than even what IME paid cable tolerates. The film is from 1995.

Yep. Was flipping channels around midnight when I was first saw it. I was very lucky, because I caught it right at the opening credits. Was 15 years old, to boot. Quite an impression! Orange used to be my favorite movie, until Seven Samurai rocked my socks.

I'm really glad they listed the Deer Hunter.

Last Temptation was the last temptation for me.

hell scorsese couldn't do it. did you think MEL COULD? pft. the controversy is not a good enough reason to make me go to see a movie.

Lists provide a fun basis for discussion. Lists are inevitable. Some, like Schindler's list, were actually important. Others, like this one, help pass the time (and nobody gets killed).

Making comments about the ones I've seen as I go down the list...

I thought Basic Instinct was overrated, and so is Paul Voerhoeven. IMO, his one truly good film was Robocop.

Of the ones I've seen on this list, The Warriors might be my favorite. Perfect in its simplicity.

I watched a copy of Last Tango In Paris about ten years ago. Okay, I could see how the explicit-looking sex stuff would have caused controversy back in '72. But aside from that, having to sit through a mumbling, barely coherent Marlon Brando really tried my patience. What the hell was he going on about and why should I care? This movie did not do anything for me. I felt sorry for Maria Schneider. I recall reading that this film ruined her film career even as it made her a star, because everyone basically saw her as just a slut afterwards.

Natural Born Killers completely wowed me. It had me mesmerized from beginning to end. It was one of those movies that made me wish I was a filmmaker so I could make cool s**t like that, too. I was conscious that NBK's violence would cause controversy, but I really and simply appreciated the film as brilliant cinematic art.

Same with JFK. With this film and then NBK, I was in awe of Oliver Stone for a brief time in the '90s - strictly in terms of his filmmaking prowess, questions of violence and politics aside. JFK blew me away just as thoroughly as Terminator 2 did earlier that same year.

I can't quite make up my mind about A Clockwork Orange - and maybe that's the point. Kubrick wanted the movie to challenge and disturb, not just be filed away under a convenient label. I can see how this movie could offend many women, and it would be understandable. I can't distance myself from Clockwork the way I can pull back from Natural Born Killers and just look at the visual pyrotechnics. NBK's graphic violence eclipses anything in Clockwork, but Kubrick's film is still more subversive in my mind.

I'm a little surprised that I Spit On Your Grave didn't make the Top 25. Maybe it's lurking just beyond...like a bad odour? I watched it only a few months ago. It is so BAD. Bad acting, bad dialogue, bad direction, bad editing...the movie would be laughable if it weren't so sick. Pretty much a waste of my time. Syl had advised me not to bother seeing it. Sorry, man, my curiosity got the better of me. However, I'd still be interested in opinions from any other Watchers who have seen this travesty. I would especially be curious to see a feminist take of the film.

I'm really surprised that United 93 made this list, I remember some talk about it but not much.

I can't watch the kind of brutality that's supposed to be in the movie. I wouldn't be able to watch it happening to Hitler.

The Warriors is a great film, but I really don't consider it controversial.

The Passion is pretty harrowing to watch, but I felt it was worth it.
