An old STAR TREK treatment created by Bryce Zabel and J. Michael Straczynski has been made available for download from Bryce's blog website. After reading the treatment I was impressed by the obvious interest and passion the two creators showed. I was almost convinced that they should have been given a chance to give it a try.

That's a really interesting take on it Tom. I'd watch it for sure, despite my misgivings about new "old" characters. Could have a lot of potential. Thanks for the link.

Reading that treatment got me excited about Star Trek all over again, which is the highest compliment I can pay Straczynski and Zabel. Bravo, gentlemen!

Sigh. It's almost cruel having this aborted plan tease us with what could have been.

This bold re-imagining aside, I still insist that a Galaxy Quest TV series would be one of the most fun and exciting ways to re-invigorate Star Trek, if not in name then certainly in spirit. Like the movie, the series Galaxy Quest would spoof Trek, but also celebrate the qualities that made Trek endearing in the first place (for people like me).

Okay, I promise I won't push my Galaxy Quest agenda again. But I think I'll write a GQ series treatment just for my own amusement...

I agree. And there's been a ton of interest by fans over the past few days... too bad the other project's already in the works. I have to wonder if it will be possible to revisit this idea after that's done. It's just what Star Trek needs - and yeah, I had misgivings about a Battlestar Galactica remake, but that worked out well.

I think everyone knows my position, and tolerates it to a degree, but why not just move on create something new? Instead of reinvention why not invention? I mean, it seems more of a trademark thing than anything, or that the fans want to start again. But there is awesome scope to expand in other directions.

I'm against it. Sorry guys.

Apparently, more than a couple groups have thought of the reboot idea. Here's a link where they have actual screenplays of the entire first season. I've read only a little, but what I've read is pretty good!

I know this is late to this specific bit of news, but I'd like to point out that the modern fetish of original storylines is both new and not-always-liberating. The first truly glorious period of Western Theatre--ancient Greece--focussed its serious plays on the same few dozen stories: Oedipus, Antigone, Orestes, etc. Yet each playwright was expected to bring his own originality to adapting the same stories. Likewise, Shakespeare's canon--arguably one of the most impressive by any writer in all history--is made up almost entirely of adaptations. Romeo and Juliet, Othello, The Merchant of Venice, etc. were all adapted (sometimes quite radically) from other works.

And frankly, I think a re-boot of Star Trek would be very exciting. A couple of years ago I even suggested as such to some forums--an "alternate universe" where the best elements of all the Treks might be brought together and re-imagined. Ben Sisko as the Captain of the Enterprise, with a Cardassian first officer, etc.
