....but I
HATE the
SINGING/LYRICS!
ie: listening to the *cough* remake of Lady Marmalade, (yea, so? you wanna make sumthin frummit?

), and as far as the
singing, it was just a voice wavering contest that makes me
cringe......

BUT! AHA! The
mmuuussiiicc! The musicians who make the song what it is! That song is so
tight, and has such a fat end on the bottom, that properly EQ'd, and sufficiently amplified, will just ripple thru your whole body.....it can almost be a religious experience with LOUD, GOOD music, and that's not my only example, surely, but do you have a song you "hate to love"

well...i hate to say it but i really LOVED the alex lifeson that dAN sent to me. it was only one tune but it convinced me that i'll have to listen to that INSTRUMENTAL Rush at the very least. Sorus has promised me some.
(i'm a little scared i'll like it)

Like Warmark I too dig RAtM, however if you listen to too much it's just one long post-industrial-angst rap. Then again I like ACDC, however if you string all their album together for and all night party it's just one long song (purists would argue the Scott/Young split

)

Victoria Williams: I love the lyrics, but her singing is just so off.

I generally tend to not listen to bands that I don't like the singer of, but I do have a tendency to dislike most replacement singers in the bands I do like.

I love a lot of the industrial/grind music, but the singing is awful.

Heh, I'd say the same about a lot of country, most of metal, and what I think is death metal ("Her Portrait in Black" by Atreyu off the Underworld:Evolution soundtrack is an example of what I mean). I find the music engaging, but the fake country accent, the metal voice that most metal singers cop, and that weird-assed demon imitation from the Atreyu type band.

Strangly (and this goes along with Slart's listening to Lady Marmalade) I like a couple of Britney Spears' earlier songs.
Same thing, the words are asinine, the singing is over done...but listen to crazy and I Did it Again--in the right hands, with the right singer (and much better lyrisist) those two songs could have rocked.

Love Trent Reznor's music, but the lyrics--especially in The Fragile--blech. Maybe Roger Waters should write them for you, eh?

Dinasaur Jr---(pretty much one guy..J Mascus) his songs rocked, and the words were great too...it's unfortunate that he can't carry a tune in a bucket...flat as piss on a plate his singing is.

he sounds better live. the music overpowers his vocals.
billy corigan (pumpkins) has a grating whine.

On a record, Billy Corgan pretty much has to whisper, because he doesn't have much of a songing voice...and when he lpays live, he tries to really strain, and it doesn't come out very well either.
He was too much of a perfectionist to hire another singer though...if memory serves, when they recorded Siamese Dream, he went back over James' and D'arcy's Guitar and bass tracks and recorded them himself.
