The world's going to sh*t at the moment ... Avatar was joy to me... To me it's a beautiful, wonderful delight. :) Sorry about the brutal edit of your post, but these two statements are the ones that stood out to me the most. You decry the world, and praise a pretty bland movie, imo. I don't think t...

What moved me initially was the idea of the storyteller/dreamer talking about a passionate love that not only was bittersweet in the world of his sleep, but in the end was especially bittersweet in his day to day life, he knew it but knew that it would never exist again. It starts off as this tale o...

God Emperor was my favourite of the Dune books, apart from the first one. I loved the socio-political interplay of the series. --A Ditto that. 2 things about the series as a whole that I loved: In every part he maintained the tension between the pure genetic necessity to survive, and the cultural/m...

For Kurasawa I've seen Ran, Seven Samurai and Roshoman, all great for their time, SS being the only one I found great at the time, Ran really good, Roshoman good. Looking forward to all the rest of his stuff too. ^Ditto.^ I'll add some contemporary ones, just to change things up... I'm a fan of Chr...

Re: Politics in Fantasy & Science Fiction
A few weeks ago I responded to a subject in the Avatar movie thread saying that a topic on this should be brought over to the SFF forum because it was worth discussing, but nothing really came of it. The subject's been on my mind since, though, and I think it's worth trying to get some discourse go...

I bought this when it came out, in hopes for more Baldur's Gate, and wasn't too disappointed. My sister and father also have copies, and the game has enough to it that it occasionally comes up in conversation. The next upgrade to the game would be to work on having a mod creation and sharing system ...

H.G. Wells 'A Dream of Armageddon'
I tried a search of the forums and didn't see this, so hopefully I'm not repeating a previous thread. Has anyone read the H.G. Wells short story titled 'A Dream of Armageddon'? I only ask because, first, I found it to be amazingly moving in the beginning, the idea of being more attached to the exist...

In the graphic novel, the Comedian was killed because he discovered something about the plan, relating to a secret island where a lot of disappeared clairvoyants and scientists had been taken to. On the island, they used actual biological specimens along with research into psychic abilities to crea...

I think 'Chasing Amy' is the best of what he's made... it would be a near perfect romantic comedy if Mr. Afleck had shaved off that poor imitation of a fumanchu, but otherwise a pretty original romantic comedy. Not to mention it didn't try to be controversial, it just told a story with a different c...

Re: The Book of Eli
If I remember right Diving Bell and the Butterfly was the same year right? I was more impressed by that movie than either 'No Country' or 'There Will Be Blood'. If that's so, I should see that movie, as 'No Country' and 'There Will Be Blood' left me pretty cold. I guess the awards season comes alon...

For a movie that I can watch repeatedly... I'd go with 'The Fifth Element'. Azeezh LIGHT! For best movie in overall quality... I'd go with some cliche like 'Casablanca', for sci-fi either 'Dark City' or 'Blade Runner', and I really liked 'The Girl on the Bridge'. Seven Samurai . No question about it...

Re: The Book of Eli
The beginning of the movie is very reminiscent of 'There Will Be Blood', which had me worrying... What? 15 minutes with no dialogue, and consciously and awkwardly so? I just finally saw There Will Be Blood yesterday, and I really don't see what the big deal is. Then again, I'm not a fan of the dire...

I'd go with it being a comment on society and where it could go... to me there's a lot of Farenheit 451 in it. It wasn't that the story was illegible in my opinion, but that it wasn't as moving as it would seem to have to be. That could have been done with a little more depth, or simply by fleshing ...
