This is a subject near and dear to my heart. During COVID, while also going through a divorce, I found myself drinking way too much. I needed a change, and sobriety wasn't appealing. I also don't like smoking it that much (mainly the smell, specifically the way it clings to everything). So I took up...

Mad God

Holy... This movie was insane. I feel slightly more insane for having watched it There's no dialog (nor is it exactly a musical, audio-visual kind of experience), and I'm not sure I could describe the plot other than maybe vaguely based on Dante's Inferno. It's basically like watching a movie with t...

Truly underrated show. Stupid, sure, but intentionally so. I'd argue that, on the whole, it was better than TWD.

Along those lines, I'd recommend Futureman on Hulu. I've rarely laughed at a show so hard and hated myself for it (if only a little) so often.

And I think everyone remembers, more or less, my opinion on Martin. I don't care if HotD is the best thing since The Magicians. I refuse to contribute (even if Matt Smith sorely tempts me)

I can't get into it. Part of that is because I've read the Silmarillion twice. And yeah, sure, that's not the source, but it wasn't supposed to contradict the source. I feel like it does, albeit vaguely. And I don't care that it's not canon; I do care that it's just not very good. Not horrible, but...

Thank you, all. Well, I suppose the winner is Uss. I thought it was going to be Ron there for a while, but... Now, as tradition demands... *clears throat* Ali, that's the kind of weak-wristed insult I'd expect from a leftist of your ilk. You came close on the Martin bit, but I think your failure to...

Found it to be a bit too YA Novel-ish for me. Not that I mind some less mature content, but too much other than some really good characterization was too on the nose for me.

Watched it until the big reveal over who the big bad was, and as I was hoping they weren't going to go there because it was just so obvious, I quit. It's basically The Boys without the guts.

I liked it, but it was never as good as the first, maybe first couple of seasons. Especially after Bachman left.

I read a lot of Piers Anthony when I was younger. He writes simply but engagingly (IIRC, he didn't learn to read until fairly late in childhood), making the books very appealing to a juvenile mind. As has been said, though, they're a bit problematic with any level of discernment. Take his Bio of a S...

I remember, Foamfollower. ;) I'll see if my girlfriend wants to go sometime (she owns a couple of restaurants, and I don't remember if I asked her opinion about the place). Couldn't go before because I was usually broke and living with a vegetarian (not a slight. I should be, but...) Oh, and not The...

Yep. For a few years now (and a couple years before that in a small town about 20 minutes north). I remember you mentioning it but forgot it was in Durham (I was living farther east near Greensboro at the time). I don't think it's there anymore, but the only reason I ever go there is for a Sushi pla...

At the very end, I ended up not hating it as much as I thought I would before that. Other than that, just the same things everyone else has said. And as I think I said in a similar Facebook post, my biggest problem was that the set-up seemed to be for Wiest to be the agent of Pike's undoing, but tha...

Did you see that ludicrous display last night? I remember having that exact exchange with Murrin some time ago, probably around the Super Bowl. Speaking of Superb Owls, anyone watching What We Do in the Shadows? Great spiritual successor, and also Max Barry. We Now Know When the Funny Vam...

I grudgingly gave in and watched it a while ago, as other options are increasingly thin on the ground (I've seen everything. Please ask). Glad I did. Unlike Firefly which, to me, was cowboys in space for the sake of cowboys in space, the western motifs actually added value to the plot and characteri...

Syl's Semi-Annual Status Symposium

Warning. Wall of text and a good bit of dirty laundry (sorry, but it's just where I've been lately) ahead. Turn around now or grab some popcorn. So I haven't been around much the last several years, and when I am, I don't stay around long. And I probably won't stick around long, though I suppose I'l...
