Doubt

Post by peter »

Really suprised, but I can't find a thread dedicated to this superb two hour masterclass of two of the best [alas only one of whom remains with us] doing their thing at the top of their game. Starring Philip Seymore Hoffman and Meryl Streep, the film is set in 60's New-York with the story surrounding the the suspicions of a convent-run school head-mistress about the 'appropriateness' of the relationship between the adjoining churches parish priest and one of her pupils, the first and only black youth in the school.

Over the course of the film the tension racks up to an almost screaming pitch as at first thinly-veiled and then overt accusations of wrong-doing fly back and forth between the films two star leads. This is a duel from which only one can emerge even partially intact and of course it must lead to an explosive denoument with no quater asked or given. The ending scenes of the film together with Hoffmans absolutely gripping Sunday sermons [of which we are treated to three] combine with the aforementioned exchanges to make this one of the most compelling - and ultimately disconcerting - pieces of film-making in recent years. The film lore than merits the Oscar nomination it recieved, and if you have not seen it to date I urge you to do say without delay.

I've seen this but it's been several years. I'll have to watch it again sometime soon.

I watched it long after the release so I didn't mention it myself, but it was a spectacular film. I imagine it would make a great stage play as well.

I have seen previews for it, but have not found it yet in my many travels to Hastings.
