Sea Harm

Post by wayfriend »

A post by Zorm prompted me to finally post this.

I put the following "movie" together. But you must understand before you view it that this is really about music. I will explain, but if you want to skip the boring expository material just scroll down and click the link.

As briefly as I can make this: This started out with my thinking about the Soundtrack to The Lord of the Rings. I wondered, as I listened to it (which I do a lot) whether there was anything about Shore's score that was really specific to LOTR, such that it wouldn't be applicable anywhere else. Or whether it was generic fantasy/adventure music that could be used in any movie.

So I picked a different movie. The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant movie. This was a good choice, because I had no actual movie to hinder my imagination. As I listened to the soundtrack, driving to work and back usually, I would try to envision scenes from the Chronicles movies that went with the music.

It wasn't long before I started seeing it all fitting together. Some of the things I imagined just seemed so brilliant to me. The story and the music fit together better than I had ever imagined. At least, for some pieces anyway.

Eventually, I came up with three solid pieces, where I could envision how the movie would unroll as the music played, scene for scene. But it was all in my head.

How could I explain what I have seen to anyone on the Watch?

After trying some different ideas, I decided the best way was to just show it. I can draw well enough, I figured, to get the general idea across, if nothing else. Then I could ask the viewer to see it in their own imagination, as they might imagine how a real movie might appear. Still scenes could be replaced with live action. My scabrous sketches, once having done the job, could be forgotten in favor of how each person imagines the characters.

Life being life, at the end of maybe two years, I have completed exactly one such piece.

So here it is. Please remember to view this with sound. The music is what it is all about.

ah way.
I seem to recall seeing these sketches before, but you are right: the score adds a lot to it.

Nicely done.

Yup, that works out very nicely!

But, uh, it took you two years to draw that??

Heh. Just kidding. Aside from the fact that that's way beyond my own artistic ability, I did know what you meant by "Life being life".

And disregards the rest
