Con Air - Garland Greene: Best ever cinematic monster!

Post by peter »

Saw this again for the nth time last night and as always totally loved it! The best ever introduction of the best ever screen monster that film has ever seen (OK - the appearance of Forrest Whitaker as Idi Amin, shot from the back in front of the cheering crowd runs it a close second). I refer of course to Garland Green. The unveiling of him from his own personal psychiatric fortress was pure over the top cinematic genius and the subsequent development of his character as the psychopath with all the dry lines brilliant! Throughout all the mayhem he remains the small ocean of calm, and at the end, when the Vegas pitcher calls "New player to the table - Do you feel lucky sir?" And a freshly suited Greene surrounded by dolly-birds replies "Yes, I feel lucky" its all you can do to stop your self from punching the air and cheering him on his way. How did the director pull that one off. Pure guilty pleasure!

Any other nominations before we put it to the vote?

I love Con Air. just pure fun.

I know it's empty calories, but it's a hell of a ride.

Yes - I remembered Die Hard before checking Gruber out: The others I didn't get. Gruber I agree, has to be in any list screens best villains..... but was he not a 'super-villain' rather than a monster (I accept that arguing the difference may be as futile as arguing the precedence between a louse and a flea. ;) ) Frank Booth alas I missed Hashi. His wiki entry certainly seems to imply the degree of unhinged psychosis required to qualify for the 'monster' epithet.......

De Niro's Max Cady from the chilling cape fear has to be in there!
